Ohio Republicans Recharged

Last night the Ohio Republican Party held a State Dinner in Mason, Ohio. Activists from all over the state came to Warren County, and were excited about the upcoming statewide ticket.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MASON, Ohio — Anyone who stepped outside the Great Wolf Lodge last night might have heard the excited gasps of riders descending the apex of the roller coaster across the parking lot at Kings Island.

There was excitement inside the lodge, too, one that permeated the ballroom where Ohio Republicans sensed they were on the rise, feeling once again that they were ascending a political roller coaster that for the past five years has been all downhill.

More than 550 of the faithful, each paying at least $100, attended the Ohio Republican Party’s sold-out dinner in a region that has been the party’s sweet spot. Party leaders, candidates and activists all spoke of a turnaround in fortunes after disastrous elections in 2006 and 2008.

“Look at the turnout here and everywhere and feel the buzz,” said John Kasich, the party’s endorsed candidate for governor. “It’s happening everywhere.”

“To paraphrase Mark Twain: Reports of the death of the Republican Party are greatly exaggerated,” said Rob Portman, endorsed for the U.S. Senate.

After losing every statewide executive office except auditor in 2006, the party has assembled a competitive 2010 ticket, led by Kasich and Portman, that has renewed hope of winning the three offices — governor, auditor and secretary of state — necessary to retain control of the State Apportionment Board. The party winning two of those three offices will control the board and redraw legislative districts in 2011 favoring the party’s candidates.

“The Republican Party is poised to make a comeback because the ticket from top to bottom is just top shelf,” said Lucas County GOP Chairman Jon Stainbrook.

And from The Middletown Journal:

Pawlenty’s remarks were met by applause, but the audience reacted more enthusiastically to John Kasich. Kasich is the Republican candidate for governor of Ohio in 2010.

“We’re a vehicle tonight,” Kasich said, “This election is only step one and phase one.”

Kasich’s lively speech also called for the re-election for Auditor of State Mary Taylor: “Thank God we’ve got a woman there and we’re gonna keep her there as long as she wants to stay.” Comments (7)

  1. Ok. Let’s try this again.

Go, John, go! I wish I still lived in Ohio so I could have a real impact and vote for you, but I’ll do what I can and blog for you from Michigan.

  3. I have great faith in John Kasich becoming our next Gov. and doing a wonderful job, bringing jobs back to our state, lowering taxes when he can, helping schools, businesses and we taxpayers. Thanks John. Respectfully, Mrs. Barbara Newland, Newland’s Resort, Lakeview, Ohio 43331

  4. As an old time Republican, more interested in building museums and libraries, as opposed to the trailer trash that is currently managing to hijack the party, I am appalled that you attended a tea baggers event.

  5. John, I was inspired by your message at the Great Wolf Lodge on Saturday night. I have admired your direct, common sense approach for several years and I intend to support you in the coming election and I know you will bring Ohio out of its fiscal difficulties when you are elected Governor. Good luck to you. Sincerely, Phyllis Gossett.

  6. John
We attended the Tea Party in Cincy specifically to see what you had to say. I liked what I heard. Not a negative attack on our current Governor, but a positive message and straight to the point answers. We do need to take our government back. I am neither D or R, but I vote for the candidates who represent my thoughts. We need you in Ohio and you have my support.

  7. John: You want to win. You must show how you intend to create jobs and make Ohio the State of choice for new jobs! Keep corruption and the gambling mofia out of Ohio! Promote better education through competition! Eliminate regulations that serve no useful purpose! Finally, be positive and refrain from opinions that as governor you have little control over, ie the Iraq war, healthcare, etc. Just say, “That’s a good question for your Congressmen”.
