John Kasich’s New Television Ad: “Record”

July 17, 2010 | Tags: , , , , , , , — Beth Hansen @ 6:19 am

I wanted to give you an exclusive first look at the new television commercial that John Kasich and Mary Taylor start airing today in selected markets across Ohio. In it, John talks to Ohioans about his background, his accomplishments and his vision for reviving Ohio’s economy and creating jobs.

Please:

1.) Give us your feedback by commenting below
2.) Use the Share This button above to share the ad with your friends and family so they can begin to learn about John’s record.

John and Mary continue to share with Ohio their plan to reduce government spending so we can begin lowering taxes, reducing red tape, and improving education and job training. Also, a strong new focus on economic development is essential to help existing businesses grow and attract new businesses.

As you can see from the new ad, John’s straightforward, direct outreach to Ohio voters is a big contrast to the $3 million in negative attack ads that Ted Strickland and his allies have used to try to smear John. These attacks make no mention of Strickland, his bad decisions, bad budgeting and bad management.

Just as Strickland’s policies have failed and hurt Ohio, his negative attack ads have failed and hurt his campaign. Public polling—as well as our own internal polls—confirms this. Ohio voters want answers to our problems, not baseless, misleading attacks. In our new ad, John points out these fallacies and, as a result, Ted Strickland’s credibility deficit deepens.

John and Mary’s mission is to get Ohio back on track and to bring Ohioans together to do it. Look out for more information soon as the campaign continues.

Again, please share your thoughts by posting a comment below and pass this message along to your friends and family.

Sincerely,

Beth Hansen
Campaign Manager

  1. I would suggest that he emphasize how important the private sector is to job creation..The private sector is not the ENEMY.They are the people who employ the rest of us.. . Don’t run from Lehman bros. While there may have been excesses on Wall street, what about the obscene excesses of the federal government?:

  2. Clear, concise, and to the point. Contrasts the smear attempts of “One-Term Ted” and tells Ohioans what they need to hear: That John and the People can turn Ohio around.

    Comment by Larry Ashbaugh — July 17, 2010 @ 8:11 am

  3. As a CPA what are Hohn’s plan to balance the budget? The Ohio Society of CPA’s made recommendations to Gov Strickland which he has ignored. Mary Taylor should get these from the Society and the campaign sjould include plans for balancing the budget.

    Comment by Carl Scheiderer — July 17, 2010 @ 8:22 am

  4. This ad needs to run in Cuyahoga County – I wear my Kasich for Govenore T-Shirt and people do not even know who he is up here. Send me more shirts, I’ll wear them everyday I am out in Public….

    Comment by Karin Shulin — July 17, 2010 @ 8:27 am

  5. For the most part, I like it. However, I wouldn’t get into the “weeds” quite as much defending my Lehman Brothers association. I think you put it out there that Strickland’s only hope is to smear me, but simply point out that it doesn’t hold water, it doesn’t work and that those are the tactics of a desperate man, one who has no message except the politics of negativity.

    Comment by Thom Harvey — July 17, 2010 @ 8:27 am

  6. I like it, its time he “set the record” straight about his Wall St. involvement.

    Comment by Mark Hanna — July 17, 2010 @ 8:34 am

  7. Voters aren’t going to swallow that you were not part of the Wall Street debacle, no matter what you say in your ads.

Also, you know that the reasons why Ohio is in a decline go way back to years of Republican dominated “Big Money” policies pushed over the edge by the Bush Administration’s lack of oversight and loose monetary policy.

You’ll have to find something else to hang your hat on if you want to get elected.

    Comment by John Kennel — July 17, 2010 @ 8:35 am

  8. Hi John, very good ad. I like your views. You will be the next Ohio Governor. I can’t wait!!

    Comment by Jim Reddington — July 17, 2010 @ 8:41 am

  9. Great! Direct and to the point. Emphatic and confident. Need more of these types of ads. Keep it up.

  10. this is a good ad, short and concise. love the way john has worked on his voice. always admired him and his budget restoring ideas.

  11. was a good ad, short and concise. like the way john has worked on his voice. always admired john and agree with his ideas on budgets. go john!

  12. I see the NRA has endorsed the Democrat candidate. Seems John does not have a very good record when it comes to the Second Amendment and gun rights.

If he doesn’t change his attitude about this–and come out strongly to take a new position, a lot of us who have never voted for a Democrat Governor will likely do just that in November.

The recent Supreme Court rulings should give him a reason to rethink his position. Better get to it–or he loses.

  13. Its about time

  14. Good message, straightforward and not negative

    Comment by Ken Hedges — July 17, 2010 @ 8:51 am

  15. I’m glad you are dealing with this straight on. This is the Dems core campaign strategy and it is very weak. I also recommend you “hammer” the one-time bailout money Gov. Strickland took to balance the state’s budget. All this did was push dealing with the real problem until after the election. This is not leading our state, this is simply avoiding the tough decisions that we need to take care of Ohio. Please contact me so that I can help get John elected.

    Comment by Roger Faulkner — July 17, 2010 @ 8:52 am

  16. I’m glad John’s setting the record straight. Strickland’s campaign of personal destruction has been having an effect. People need to know the truth.

    Comment by Gordon Breault — July 17, 2010 @ 8:58 am

  17. Well, actually, the ad DOES mention Strickland. What would John do to help education (which is a mess in this state)? I’m no fan of Strickland, but I think he inherited a mess from Taft!

    Comment by susan — July 17, 2010 @ 8:59 am

  18. Very well done on a positive note.

    Comment by Orville Cruea — July 17, 2010 @ 8:59 am

  19. The ad is well done…the Lehman Brothers thing had to be addressed…”two-man office” is quite effective…it’s a huge improvement over earlier ads.

    Comment by richard tompkins — July 17, 2010 @ 9:02 am

  20. John,
Thank you for addressing the Lehman Brothers accusation from your opponent. It is very important to let the public know your background with the federal government. I like the ad…keep it up.

    Comment by Donna Schneider — July 17, 2010 @ 9:03 am

  21. John, for you to win (and you can), you better be heard and seen all the time stating your past and your thoughts for Ohio’s future. Your past MUST be your key to win……USE IT, show what you have done…..and will continue to do.

    Comment by Rick Henry — July 17, 2010 @ 9:05 am

  22. Thanks for the preview. John needs to get out and start talking about what HE is going to do to get Ohio out of the mess its in. This ad is a start in that direction. Also, get the pathetic ads off the airwaves the republican governors association are running. They are poorly done and not very inspirational – actually quite depressing. Is John willing to make the tough decisions? Taft really did the Republican Party in Ohio a huge disservice with his weak leadership. Not sure John is willing to do what it takes to lead our state. Does John have a “big picture” plan or is his plan to just cut taxes and hope for the best? I can’t support John yet. Help!!

    Comment by Mary Kuhar — July 17, 2010 @ 9:05 am

  23. I think John talking about his Lehman Brothers experience in response to Strickland’s attack sounds defensive. I would leave that out.

  24. Great ad — continue to respond directly and immediately to every negative ad that they run.
    Nice job!

    Comment by Douglas Wiles — July 17, 2010 @ 9:07 am

  25. Very good ad. I have heard many people ask “when is Kasich going to defend the ads Strickland is doing?” and this is it. It is direct and firm but not an attack ad. Keep up the good work and tell people who Kasich is and what he plans to do for Ohio. Give the people the facts!

    Comment by Carol Friel — July 17, 2010 @ 9:07 am

  26. This is a good add….you needed to do this because Strickland has nothing positive to say about himself so he will discredit John every chance he has..

    Comment by John Jensen — July 17, 2010 @ 9:07 am

  27. I hope that in addition to this ad you would do the traditional introduction ad that Rex is so good at creating. My guess is most Ohioans don’t know anything about John Kasich. A great bio piece might give voters a better idea of who John Kasich is, where he comes from and how he will lead Ohio out of this crisis.

    Keep up the good work.
    Cyndy

    Comment by Cyndy — July 17, 2010 @ 9:09 am

  28. If the negative attack adds against John Kasich have failed, then why are you putting out such a defensive add? I think people will vote for the side with the best policies to create jobs. Sell me on the policy changes not on trying to defend your resume.

    Comment by omar — July 17, 2010 @ 9:12 am

  29. Thank you for addressing your the criticism by Strickland. You must also address education and the completion of I 71. The bridges are complete but no money was allocated to finish the project. That will resonate with many people. Stimulus road money????? Why not there on a highway travelled by thousands each day. PLEASE check into this. Thanks.

    Comment by Charlayne Schultz — July 17, 2010 @ 9:12 am

  30. Great ad refuting John’s opponent’s attacks!

    Comment by Ann Kitzmiller — July 17, 2010 @ 9:13 am

  31. This is a much better approach than the lame ads that have been running recently. Why did it take you so long to get more aggressive? Think you still need to be clearer on what you are going to do differently than Strickland.

    Comment by john green — July 17, 2010 @ 9:15 am

  32. Take that, Ted Strickland! Great ad!

    Comment by Daphne Hawk — July 17, 2010 @ 9:16 am

  33. Not bad but defensive. We need more aggressive media exposure with some new ideas and specific things we’ll do or change. Campaign seems too low key compared to Stricklands. Up to now it didn’t appear John was campaigning. Need to ask for vote. More enthusiasm.

    Comment by Jim Kanary — July 17, 2010 @ 9:23 am

  34. Go John, Bring those jobs back!!!

    Comment by Mel Ponzi — July 17, 2010 @ 9:24 am

  35. Very good. I also like new Republican Governors spot. At some point I hope you point out Ted ran against what he called “A Republican Culture of Corruption” and his administration and party have made Bob Taft look like a choir boy.

    Comment by Terry Fleming — July 17, 2010 @ 9:25 am

  36. This is the kind of ad I had wished to see to answer the allegations. It is more effective than surrogate ones I’ve seen in the past. I think this ad should air through the election day.

    Comment by Oyebode Olakanmi — July 17, 2010 @ 9:26 am

  37. Great ad. Let’s be positive.

    Comment by Ted Tom — July 17, 2010 @ 9:29 am

  38. Yes! A straight-talk response as it should be. Now, going forward, can you develop a series of spots showing individual examples of how jobs have been saved or created, starting with something like , “this is the Xth in a series of …,” and ending with something like: “Watch for others in this series. For more specific examples of xxx, see yyy.”

    Comment by Chris Rauckis — July 17, 2010 @ 9:30 am

  39. I am a Kasich voter, and you’re right that Ohioans (at least this one and all the other voters I know) are tired of attack ads. To strengthen the position and give you a few more seconds in a :30 to make your case, I’d never mention Strickland at all. “Ohio has lost 400,000 jobs in the last X years” is enough. Viewers can surmise the rest.

Although bad decisions might have been made, Strickland is not personally responsible for an economy that tanked any more than John is. It was a collective failure by a lot of people who took their eyes off the ball.

Your note says that in this ad, John “talks to Ohioans about his background, his accomplishments and his vision for reviving Ohio’s economy and creating jobs.” In a very limited time, does a fine job on two out of three. But the vision is “working together to get Ohio on the right track,” or some such phrase, and today’s voters–mad, scared, and everything in between–don’t want vagueness. They want specifics.

How will we all work together to get Ohio back on track? When? What are his ideas–specifically? To differentiate this campaign, make it about solutions and how you’ll make them happen.

    And good luck.

  40. Great Ad! Keep it going.

    Comment by Irene M. Morrow — July 17, 2010 @ 9:32 am

  41. I like it! Straightforward and to the point.

    Comment by Barbara Martin — July 17, 2010 @ 9:32 am

  42. I approve of this ad because it answers Stricklands ad about Kasich and Lehman Bros.

On another matter, I am really puzzled by the recent dead silence from the Strickland campaign. I hope they are not planning to escalate the negative aspects of their campaign.

    Comment by Fred W Ehrman — July 17, 2010 @ 9:32 am

  43. I like the ad. However, it is again too general. You need additional ads to specifically outline how we are going to get out of this mess.

I love John Kasich and all he did during his previous political career (except the gun ban issue, but I won’t go into that here). But voters don’t want to hear “politician-speak”. All Ohio residents, in all political parties, want to hear specifics of how we can entice business growth, lower taxes, and balance the State budget; thus, why you are the best team for Ohio.

I thank both candidates for their willingness to be public servants in a time when that is even more difficult than usual.

    God bless!

    Comment by Terri Hess — July 17, 2010 @ 9:33 am

  44. Good ad.

    Suggestions -
More compare & contrast would be good also.

Emphasis on John’s track record and Strickland’s lack of one

  45. Great commercial!

    Comment by Diana — July 17, 2010 @ 9:33 am

  46. Thanks for the look at the new ad. I think that this offers a respectable and believable response to the attack ads. The public needs to know about John’s successes and that he is the guy to lead Ohio into the future. The public also needs to know what a hard worker John is and that his commitment to the public is real.

    Please get John elected.

  48. Mr. Kasich: Dont dwell too much on your Leeman Bros. contact. Basically it tells folks that YOU WENT OUT & GOT A REAL JOB. You dont depend on the government lifetime employment guarantee. Ted Strickland is a fool. He hasn’t done a days work since he’s been there…..Dave Arcaro

    Comment by Dave Arcaro — July 17, 2010 @ 9:38 am

  49. Great ad! Pointing out that Strickland cannot talk about anything positive he has done for Ohio is thought provoking!

    Comment by Audrey McHenry — July 17, 2010 @ 9:38 am

  50. I have seen the Strickland ads against you, and I thought you DID work on Wall St in NYC because of these ads. Thanks for clearing this up! There are NO jobs in NE Ohio! My son, who grad from college w/an accounting degree, has gone to Guangzhou, China to manage a school there. Guess what…3 of his friends are joining him. These are kids from Western Reserve Academy who have no jobs, no future. Please make Ohio jobs!!! Please make Ohio an industry-friendly state! Please cut our taxes!

    Comment by Karen Ripple — July 17, 2010 @ 9:39 am

  51. I love it! It’s about time we knock down Strickland’s smears! FYI, the ad that bothers me is the one on every 10 minutes it seems, with the 3 people wondering when they’ll lose their jobs, while the phone’s ringing off the hook in the background! My thought is if they lose their jobs it’s their own fault for being slackers, not Stricklands! I know that’s not John’s ad, but it’s not doing the job!

    Comment by Yvonne Honeybrink — July 17, 2010 @ 9:39 am

  52. Yes, we need to get our state and our country back on track! We need Republicans back in office as the majority.

It is hard for me, but I have a job in healthcare. Just wish the pay was better!

What about education for adults? I need to go back to school.

    Comment by Kathleen Goodyear — July 17, 2010 @ 9:40 am

  53. This ad is OK if John was running for school suprentendent!…No one has heard from John for months, what about the Immigration issue? What about The State budget, this ad is weak and ineffective! Jobs? thats all you have against Strickland? This ad gives me no incentive to vote for John.Of course,I will,I am a Conservative, but I do so reluctantly…….No Fire,No passion….Nothing new!

    Comment by erica stephens — July 17, 2010 @ 9:41 am

  54. This ad should run in the Cuyahoga, Summit, Stark County areas. These areas have been hard hit by job losses and Strickland runs his ads constantly. It is a very short ad but I do think addresses the negativism of the Strickland ads.

    Comment by Elizabeth — July 17, 2010 @ 9:42 am

  55. Sounds good to me. We need Strickland out of there.

    Comment by Robert — July 17, 2010 @ 9:42 am

  56. Good hard hitting message!

    Comment by John Stevenson — July 17, 2010 @ 9:44 am

  57. It is a great ad…..especially the part about saying he did not run Lehman Brothers and that he was one of 700 persons who worked for Lehman Brothers…..and that he worked in a small two person office in Columbus. The “other side” loves to portray John as being a “fat cat” on Wall Street! Great ad!

    Comment by Anne Shale — July 17, 2010 @ 9:45 am

  58. Finally, a very strong response to the Lehman ad! We have forwarded this to many, and have asked them to do the same. We all need to get his name and record out there. Please include his strong background in future ads, and consider an email with his complete background and accomplishments. The wikipedia page is too difficult to work with and to forward others.

    Comment by Kathleen Snow — July 17, 2010 @ 9:45 am

  59. they lied a lot. can`t beleive a thing they say

    Comment by Lawrence Hershiser — July 17, 2010 @ 9:47 am

  60. I like the new add. It would be nice if you could have briefly stated what you did in the office in Columbus. “Helped individuals and or companies put retirement and other savings pans in place”. Somehow to further distance yourself from the high level decisions within Lehman brothers that put them on the course of destruction.

I would also start to state the number of young adults that leave Ohio every year. Not sure where we rank now, but for a couple recent years we led the nation in the under 30 year olds that left Ohio.

    Comment by mike — July 17, 2010 @ 9:47 am

  61. The biggest problem with any ad…

    1) I already know what problems I have, so you do not have to tell me that I have a problem. So tell me how and what you are going to do to correct the problem.

    2) Goverment is, a morjity of the time… The problem. Cut Goverment, then you can cut taxs, then I can invest more of my effort into the encomeny.

    3) Stop the hand outs, there are always exceptions, as there will always be. But the comuinty can take better care of these exceptions, better then the goverment.

    Comment by John — July 17, 2010 @ 9:47 am

  62. Platform for 2010 Election

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!!

My friend and neighbor wants to promote a “Congressional Reform Act of 2010″.. It would contain eight provisions, all of which would probably be strongly endorsed by those who drafted the Constitution and the Bill of Rights..

I know many of you will say, “this is impossible”. Let me remind you, Congress has the lowest approval of any entity in Government, now is the time when Americans will join together to reform Congress – the entity that represents us.

We need to get a Senator to introduce this bill in the US Senate and a Representative to introduce a similar bill in the US House. These people will become American heroes….

  63. Good work, and keep it up. John should continue to emphasize that he has a record of balancing budgets, no matter what organization he was working for.

  64. Do not make the mistake that Betty Montgomery made. She lost because she strayed from the campaign method that had done her so well for years.
Stick with positive, personal advertising such as, “Here is what I can do/ have planned for Ohio,” and, “This is what I have already done for Ohio and plan to continue to do when I am elected governor.” Never mention your opponent by name! Why give him free advertising?
Next, remember, the person with the most yard signs win. They are seen hundreds of times a day and are truly a major influence on the undecided/uninformed voter.
No, I do not sell yard signs, but I have voted for 48 years.

  65. I am more interested in the current unemployment numbers, not the total for the past few years. I am also concerned that John does associate himself as a “Lincoln” Republican. The alternative is the trailer trash like that Palin person who have turned the party into one that closes museums instead of endowing them.

    Comment by Michael Haven — July 17, 2010 @ 9:51 am

  66. Great start! I think for starters, Mr. Kasich does need to keep focusing on his background and that he was NOT the man who brough Wall St down. Once he establishes who he is–and isn’t–with Ohioans, then he can more forcefully outline his fiscal plans. Please do not let the Dems define Mr. Kasich for the electorate! And PLEASE let’s work together to win so we can get the Democratic regime out of OBM (where I work)!!!

    Comment by Robert — July 17, 2010 @ 9:51 am

  67. I think this ad is so much better than the one with the people talking about NCR.

  69. Hello Beth, I like the campaign ad however I
would breakdown the amount of jobs that have
been lost under Ted Stricklands “Watch”.
Meaning, from the time he took office until
present day how many jobs have been lost, how
many per month, per quarter etc…also from
what counties jobs have been lost and what
counties have been hit the hardest..Do a “JOBS
AUDIT” of the State of Ohio…Also, How Ted
Strickland has managed the Budget for the
State of Ohio and How he has not FIXED the
School Funding Problem. The Scandals under
his watch as Governor, Overtime for state
workers that has been running wild, and why it
took him so long to REACT to the State of Ohio
    and its financial Problems.

    Comment by Chris Erb — July 17, 2010 @ 9:55 am

  70. It isn’t a bad ad – but I hope you will do ads that don’t mention Gov. Strickland and stick to what YOU have to offer as the governor of Ohio.
Many of us in Ohio would like our government officials to stop playing the blame game and DO what you are elected to do – govern the state to the best of your ability.

    Comment by Beth — July 17, 2010 @ 9:55 am

  71. John: I had a hunch that you were waiting to start fighting back. I am very happy to see you finally telling it like it is. The Dems do nothing but lie – that’s their mark in trade. Keep up the new ads all over the State so people will know who you are.

    Comment by Dennis J Atkeson — July 17, 2010 @ 9:59 am

  72. I believe that John Kasich is better suited to sit in the Governors seat due to his morals and commitment to Ohio. The current Governor was on track at first but has taken a wrong turn in the road and has in my option damaged Ohio severely in many areas. It will take some doing to being us back, and I believe John just may have the right stuff to do it.

    Comment by Robert Gay — July 17, 2010 @ 9:59 am

  73. I liked your ad, HOWEVER, I feel you should include that you will use and follow the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence as a guide and MEAN IT. This means upholding of all of the amendments and not twist and turn some, and bring our country back to the conservative basis that it was founded on. Prayer and Religion back into school. Our 2nd amendment rights. Smaller Government, Less Taxes etc etc. Thank you Larry Funk

  75. One thing that I have not heard much of from John is his stand on second amendment rights.
As you probably are aware, Buckeye Firearms is endorsing Strickland, mainly for his signing several bills that pertain to guns and concealed carry.
I would like to hear John’s views

    Comment by Bill Scantlen — July 17, 2010 @ 10:02 am

  76. Hi,
I liked the ad…except! I wish you would focus MORE on the exact role John had back in the Newt Congress which did balance the budget. I think that is a hugely important point that will help get votes.
And..also, SO WHAT if he made money in Lehman brothers…why is that a bad thing?
3rdly–how about getting Dave Hobson, former beloved Congressman from the Spfld-Dayton region to help John campaign? That goofy Strickland is now taking credit for anything coming to Wright Patt AFB, when it is Hobson and Turner who did the footwork! Bring Hobson out of retirement to help John. People here LOVE Dave Hobson!!

  77. Good ad but you will continue to be critized on your lack of specifics. At some point, you will need to at least provide an outline of your plan.
Also, relating what you did in Washington that produced positive results ON A NATIONAL LEVEL should be highlighted more. For example, politicians are known for putting their name on someone elses work and claiming the work for themselves: “I created jobs while in congress” does not hold water if all that was done was to sign some legislation written by someone else that contained pork that paid for the renovation of a “restuarant on the bay.” Be specific on YOUR record; YOUR accomplishments.

  78. I stood beside John in 1982 when we were the only campaign to oust an incumbent. (Shamansky) I also helped John at the Convention in New Orleans in 1988.
I was repaid by John crumbling to Hillary and his lack of defending our 2nd amendment rights! He has never really addressed this. Our last Republican Governor, Bob Taxt, was a turncoat too.
Until John proves himself as a champion of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, my fellow Reagan conservatives and I will have a very, very hard time supporting him. The freedom ball is in your court John, and we haven’t seen you defend it.

  79. I love, Love, LOVE John!!!! I watched his program on FNC faithfully and know he is one of the two guys from congress who balanced the budget in the Clinton years! I very much appreciate the new commercial but it needs to go further (for the next one!) by telling what he will do and I KNOW HE WILL!!! I cannot give at the moment but I have already volunteered here in Lake Co. to help!!! Love and PRAYERS, M

  80. I liked the ad. The only part that seemed a little rough was the transition between the remarks about Leman Brothers and then going to your accomplishments. It isn’t as clear as it could be that your accomplishment were from that job or some place else. I posted you on my fb page and I will let you know if I get any more comments from my friends. Comment by Linda Hayes — July 17, 2010 @ 10:12 am

  84. This is a step in the right direction. I have been suggesting to the campaign that 1) the negative ads put up by the Republican governors, Ohio Republican Party, National Republican Party, and others, are not helpful. They are insulting and play into Strickland’s hands. As much as John does not control them, surely he and the campaign must have some influence with these people. I would say if the Kasich campaign has not sent to these groups word about what is NOT helpful, then enough is not beind done. This ad, on the other hand is more positive about John and to the point. Somewhere down the line we might want to say HOW this is going to be done. There might also be a national tie-in by mentioning the “jobs” that have been “created” are part-time, one-time, some-time, or project federal jobs that end quickly – such as what they counted as “new jobs” that amounted to the usual and necessary census hires, that are now gone. I would also go back to specific promises made by Strickland in his last campaign with a fine tooth comb and hold him accountable, other than jobs.

    Comment by David Keck — July 17, 2010 @ 10:13 am

  85. I think the ad is good in that it points out that Strickland just wants to attack. I would add in later advertisements that John Kasich balanced the budget in Congress. Outside of Central Ohio, the voters probably do not know that he served in Congress and headed the Budget Committee.

    Comment by Cathy Pultz — July 17, 2010 @ 10:13 am

  86. I like the ad. It effectively answers the critics & Strickland’s tired old ad re: Lehman Bros. I have a suggestion: in the next ad, please highlight HOW you are going to create jobs for OH.

P.S. Do you guys need any help in the campaign? I have a seven month old baby boy, but my husband’s & my schedules are changing very soon so I may get a few hours of free time a week without the baby, & I’d love to help you.

  87. Simple and to the point. A good start. My thought was, maybe a little too simple. Sharon Angle in Arizona had an add that was really done well, about Harry Reid. Even the music was spot on. I would like to see something like that as the elections draw nearer. Something that really gets your attention from the first picture. Anyway, I want John to win very much, so good luck to everyone with this campaign.

  88. This is the type of ad I was hoping for. Next step? Head for Kenton, Bellefontaine, Sidney, Marion, Lima, or a score of other cities – stand next to the “For Sale” or “For Lease” signs in front of empty factories (I can tell you where a lot of them are!) and discuss your plans for getting jobs back inside those plants/factories. Thanks for asking!

  101. In an old government book, 1920′s I think, I read that you should never say your apponates name in advertisements or speeches. It’s your time and your money, spend it on yourself. The more you say your apponates name, good or bad, the more people will associate with it come election day. Choose words like the present Governor, or my apponate or etc. Be more precise with how you will solve the current problems. We know what the Governor tried and it hasn’t worked, so tell what you think will work. Have stats to back up what you say.

  105. Dear Mr. Kasich:

The video sounds good …. honest, short, and to-the-point …. it’s very good, indeed!

I’m one of those unemployed and I’m very, VERY, did I say VERY, angry and upset with what Strickland and Obama have been doing lately …. and I’m very worried for the future of not only Ohio but also this country. When will the politicians STOP with their over-reaching and over-spending?

My sense, Mr. Kasich, is that you are very sincere with your desire to balance Ohio’s budget and to bring back jobs to Ohio. But you know, you have quite a “brick wall” of politicians, lobbyists, and special interest groups to overcome. So I am praying to Our Lord, Jesus Christ, for your success at winning Ohio’s governorship in November.

May God continue to bless and keep you, your family, all Ohioans, and all Americans …. we need Jesus Christ’s presence in our leaders, and I’m trusting you to keep Our Lord with you in all your political and business dealings.

I know you’re busy, but if you would please keep me and many of my friends in your prayers …. I have plenty of acquaintances who are out of work. Thank you and God bless you.

    Very sincerely,

    Mary Alice

  107. This new ad is much better than previous “style”, involving 2 – 3 common people discussing Stricklands record. And John effectively defends his Lehman record.
However, you can’t rey on defensivness & John’s broad ideas for the Ohio alone.
Start linking Strickland with the Obama “big government” agenda. Go on the attack. Purchase TV ad space in all Ohio markets with the linking of Strickland to Obama’s big government and you will have a winner. Although Cuyahoga County that type of ad may be less effective… most markets it will do very well!

  108. It is easy to create jobs — see how China does it. The Unions are the enemy of governments and private ownership. Reduce waste and spending in government and automatically taxes will drop down and the economy will get stronger. Big government is our enemy and never the long term solution. Illegal immigration is a problem in Ohio that no leadership has been shown. Best to you. Darol

  109. Well done. This was a good hit at the accusations about Lehman Bros. Of course conservatives know Democrats can never run on their true intentions or records that’s why they went for class envy and innuendo about job at Lehman Bros. I hope along with Ohio jobs You’ll be able to undo the public unions grip on our tax dollars. We need to strip the budget of nanny government regulations and intrusion into our personal lives. This may not be good fodder for an ad but its a necessary step once elected.
Thanks John, for stepping up and taking on the responsibility and headache that comes with running for office. We really need people like you to help us take back our country.

  113. This commercial is a waste of money. The first 10 seconds of this 30 second commercial are about Ted Strickland, and casts blame for the loss of 400,000 Ohio jobs solely on him. Get real! The economic downturn was nationwide, not caused by the Ohio Governor, and the economy caused loss of jobs. The next 10 seconds are weak defensive and ineffective protests claiming that Kasich only worked there, etc. The last 10 seconds is a claim that voting for Kasich will produce jobs. If only it were that simple. Wishing for jobs doesn’t produce them. And, Kasich gives no clue how he plans to accomplish it. Scrap this commercial. Write and work a business plan. Then present the man – serious, businesslike, properly dressed – stating 1 or 2 specific constructive goals of how he plans to improve and grow a better economy and the resulting jobs.

  114. Several days ago I wrote to you with several questions about fixing Ohio’s budget and school funding problems. Your reply completely ignored the questions, and contained only political rhetoric about school vouchers, etc.
If you continue with these types of non-answers, we will have no choice but to vote for Strickland. Much as I don’t like taxes, at least he (Strickland) had the guts to say we could not afford to inact the planned tax cuts.

  123. John is his own best salesman and comes across very strong in this ad. Will you be doing a bio ad to give people who are not familiar with John and his career more insight?

    Comment by Michael D. Cope — July 17, 2010 @ 10:57 am

  124. Thank God you’re changing tack. The pervious Kasich ads were all basically weak, boring attack ads. Meanwhile, Strickland is hammering John on his past, in a way that allows Strickland to define John.

Finally, John is defending himself and defining himself! But I think this can and should be done in more detail. In this ad John states he has a record of balancing budgets. Don’t assume people are familiar with John’s political past. I think you should follow up this ad with a more detailed one, preferably with historical footage, showing what John did in Congress to balance the budget, which Clinton erroneously gets credit for. The 6th paragraph under John’s “Biography” section at his website says it all:

“As a nine-term Congressman, John played major leadership roles in a variety of groundbreaking achievements. Driven by a belief that government shouldn’t live beyond its means, John worked as Chairman of the House Budget Committee to construct the plan that balanced the federal budget for the first time since man first walked on the moon. At first the naysayers said it couldn’t be done, then they said it shouldn’t be done, then they said it wouldn’t be done. But John, working with a team of other leaders, proved them all wrong. Together they balanced the budget, provided for the largest government surplus our country has ever seen, and opened the door for an era of tremendous job growth and prosperity.”

This is what John brings to the table and what he can do for Ohioans. Although Ohio already operates under a balanced budget, I trust John to further trim the budget in areas that Democrats would never consider, possibly giving Ohio a budget surplus.

Out of control spending/ wasted tax money is foremost on votes’ minds. Please consider this feedback.

    Sincerely,

    Robert Mills

Ted Strickland signed a bill that gives Ohioians only 7 days to renew their license tags.
Ted Strickland raised the cost of passports to Canada by $25.00 meanwhile illegals cross the border with diseases, drugs and weapons and eventually enter OUR state free.
Ted Strickland has done little to nothing to encourage factories to build in our state by failing to enact a fair income tax.

  131. I would much prefer to see the Republicans taking the offensive rather than defending themselves against accusations of the left. The left is very good at accusing the right of things that are either partial truths or total lies, and the right always seems to be on the defensive. I’d like to see the right take the lead and destroy the left. God knows they have given up plenty of ammunition, i.e.,the true cost of the healthcare program, Black Panthers, Gulf oil debacle, etc., etc.

The Republicans need to wake up and smell the coffee or we are doomed to continued years of socialism/Marxism!!!

But, Strickland’s ad in which he tries to make Mr. Kasich look like a Wall Street Demon is a laugh …
$500,000 is hardly a killing in the market. It only shows that he[Mr. Strickland] is trying to smear John Kasich, and he has no ammunition.

  138. Good ad overall. I’m no political operative, so I may be wrong; but I would have liked to have seen John deliver a more forceful counter-punch to Strickland’s salacious attempt to smear John. It’s one thing to go after your opponent; but Strickland went after John for providing for his family. And, to me, that’s akin to going after the family. Which is a low blow, even for a democrat.

  150. If you are going to mention that Strickland is simply running “attack ads” that do not focus on his “bad” record, maybe it would be better to not mention his record as governor and focus on John’s very strong past record, including his time in Congress (issues he faced then; how he voted favorably for positive programs for the U.S. and for Ohio). No apologies for his time at Leihman are necessary~this ad seems to do that at one point, in both physical position and verbally (attitudes expressed by vocal expression can communicate more than intended sometimes), Keep it going. Need to move this administration to the sidelines.

  152. You spend too much time in the 31 second slot explaining your part in Lehman Bros. Too much defence and not enough offense.

I suggest the following “Strikland AND THE DEMOCRATS DON’T want you to know how many jobs were lost in Ohio since THEY have been in office.” It’s 300,000 (put correct number here). They talk about a 2-man office where I worked from xxxx to xxxx, but NOT ABOUT JOBS.

My past legislative accomplishments speak for themselves. I helped Ohio before. I can help AGAIN. Vote for me in November. I’ll help restore jobs and build our economy again.

It is about time for you to shed the false image strickland campgains. Next I want to see you talk about what the 9th and 10th amendments mean to you. I know he was a fox news staffer, Turn the converation back to the our founding documents and how to create jobs. Openly oppose Cap and Trade and blame the libs for the Ban on oil refineries and on land drilling. The bp problem is one of the left’s policies. Freedom, Liberty, natural rights and indivual rights, those are your tickets to win. Nail strickland on his record. What has he signed that has shrinked government?

  157. Good commercial, to the point. Reduce taxes and bring businesses to Ohio. Reduce the WASTEFUL government spending that we currently have. $70,000.00/yr jobs to political friends to run the lottery in each county, shameful. The other government jobs Strickland created for political friends, shameful.
Utilize Mary Taylor’s experience and knowledge also. I truly believe that these two CAN change our state for the better.

    Comment by Pam Denczak Henderhan — July 17, 2010 @ 12:04 pm

  158. We do need economic solutions, as we are all aware; but I’m and teacher who is concerned with Ohio’s education. Strickland’ s educational programs are failing our schools and most importantly the child. Reallocating funds in districts along with state and federal funding must be “fixed” to secure our communities’ future. I will offer and gain support for your campaign once I hear Kaisch’s platform for fixing Ohio’s educational institutions. Stronger schools=stronger communities=more business= more jobs!

    Comment by Shelly Robinson — July 17, 2010 @ 12:06 pm

  159. Sorry, but as a registered Republican I plan to vote for Mr. Strickland. I just don’t trust your voting record on guns. I feel I should be able to own any gun I want and can afford to buy. It is not your or the government’s business what a law abiding citizen owns or how he uses it unless he is doing something illegal. What part of the 2nd amendment’s “shall not be infringed” do you not understand? To me that means the government will not and should not mess with my ability to defend myself or my loved ones. STAY OUT OF MY BUSINESS PLEASE!

    Comment by Sherry — July 17, 2010 @ 12:12 pm

  161. This is the kind of upfront response needed to counter smear tactics, allegations and innuendo. Strickland’s a smoothie. He reminds me of Saruman (if you’re a Tolkien fan). I believe that’s how he beat Ken Blackwell in 2006. Blackwell didn’t convey himself well to the audience. Also, hearing him during the 2006 debates, I would have sworn he held whatever job title he thought he needed to sound authoritative. If you continue to answer his campaign attacks well and present yourself well to the public, you’ll beat him.

  168. Generally I liked the video. Two points: 1) change “…under Ted Strickland…” to “…while Ted Strickland has been governor…” — though we may not like the incumbent, he is due the measure of respect afforded him by the office. 2) John’s goals could be clearer: #1 – Balance the budget(?) #2 – make Ohio more attractive to employers(?) #3 – ??. What’s Mary going to be doing?? Well, there you go, just one man’s opinion. Success in November!

I was almost to the point of commenting about the ads that have been running to this point…I personally feel they are way to subtle and ineffective…The current Gov. needs to be hit harder…This new ad is finally starting to answer of few aligations…Need to be heavier handed with your answers…Somehow the Dems are allowed to throw c—–, but the Conservitives are not suppose to do that…It’s time the FIGHT BACK, HARD……

    Comment by Kevin Foland — July 17, 2010 @ 1:01 pm

  172. Details. How will Kasich bring back jobs to OH? It’s one thing to point out jobs were lost under Strickland and make generic promises, and quite another to actually do it. So I want to hear the details of how Kasich intends to bring back jobs to OH.

  174. Very good and too the point. The Dems are portraing him as a “Wall Street” man so he has to hit back very hard on that point. This ad was a good starting point to countering that attack. It’s good to have a candidate that puts “God” first in his life and tells the people the truth – not what he thinks people want to hear.

    Comment by Carla Lohrer — July 17, 2010 @ 1:12 pm

  176. Good response!! Let Strickland throw the mud, answer back directly without slinging mud back. This year, the dems are running from obamers record and repubs don’t need the negative response.

Build up slow over the remaining months. It is good to be a little behind at this time and start building the momentum for Nov.

Letters to the editor can bring out the Marc Dann story!

    Comment by Don Van Fossen — July 17, 2010 @ 1:13 pm

  177. If we find it necessary to respond only to this specific area of Democrats interest, then I guess it’s okay. I personally would have answered the implied charges within a presentation involving substantive concerns, or within an offering of future efforts the voters can expect from the candidate. So far, no one has surfaced any discussion about how they might deal with the budget issues…that’s what will offer some hope to the voters. Now it will be their turn to counter with some less substantive issue…quid pro quo! Raise some more money and buy some more air time. Voters are beginning to see the real driver behind politics.

    Hang tough!

    Comment by Bob Labadie — July 17, 2010 @ 1:16 pm

  178. Glad to hear the facts about Mr. Kasich’s involvement with Lehman Brothers. This was clear, concise, and not too full of political rhetoric that is just “blah, blah, blah same old same old” campaign promises that we always hear from the candidates.

    Comment by Tracie Moore — July 17, 2010 @ 1:20 pm

  179. This is a powerful ad. I would’ve added he balanced those budgets in DC. as a Congressman who headed up the committee.

I noticed several other comments dealing with 2nd amendment. I would not worry about this endorsement. Ohio has already acted in this area and if these people are conservative they’ll vote for John on economics.

    Comment by Don Ruben — July 17, 2010 @ 1:36 pm

  180. Until John Kasich comes out pro second amendment he will lose the pro gun vote. Strickland is cornering this important voting bloc and John seems not to be on message with the voters who often will make their choice on this single important issue. Thank you and the ad hits home on the economy in Ohio.

    Comment by Maria Newberry — July 17, 2010 @ 1:40 pm

  181. What are John Kasich’s ideas about having the Ohio AG sue to exempt Ohioans from the disastrous Obamacare regulations and mandates as other states are doing? Republican candidates for high offices should state their intentions to govern with the majority of the people rather than against the wishes of the people. There are good free market solutions to many healthcare problems.

    Comment by Janet Berkopec — July 17, 2010 @ 2:13 pm

  182. I agree with your ideals-Share with Ohioans that MacDonald (Virginia) and Christie (New Jersey) have turned billions of deficit to surplus in 6 months using those principles. Principles you used in 1990′s in Washington.

    Comment by Emelia — July 17, 2010 @ 2:27 pm

  184. Half truths, distortions, and out right lies.

The jobs that have been lost under Strickland are the direct result of 30 years of systematic REPUBLICAN deregulation, starting with Reagan.

NAFTA was Clinton’s one big administrative mistake.

Bush II passed many ill advised tax cuts, mostly welfare for the rich.

You are headed in the wrong direction.

    Comment by Sally — July 17, 2010 @ 2:49 pm

  188. I like the new commercial–especially John’s explaination that he wasn’t a “big wheel” in Lehman Brothers. However, most Ohioans want to know what he specifically plans to do to balance Ohio’s budget and improve the job outlook. I wish he’d produce a commercial that says: “Here is what I plan to do as Governor”—and give specific points “1-2-3″ about the changes/improvements he plans to make if elected. He certainly has my vote..

    Comment by Roger — July 17, 2010 @ 3:06 pm

  191. Addressing the Lehman situation was the right thing to do, but opposition ads are focusing on the money earned while at Lehman. Address the fact that John didn’t receive a bonus in ’08. Get specific as to when he earned his money there. The ‘two man office” comment is a VERY good point. Talk tax cuts, bringing companies back to Ohio and dispell the rhetoric slamming Corporate America. Who does the oppostion think employs people in the country? Government jobs have to be paid for by tax revenue, not honest profts.

    Comment by Paul Corbeil — July 17, 2010 @ 3:33 pm

  192. The ad is OK. I understand your need to set the record straight about Lehman. But you need to move on and the tell the people where you stand on the current topics; jobs, fed gov, health care, etc. You have my vote, but I want to hear more from you.

    Comment by Pat Rouse — July 17, 2010 @ 3:39 pm

  193. I agree totally with #124. He needs a strong comeback for the Lehman brothers attack. The initial words were good, but he sounded a little defensive. It is very effective to say that he was in a ’2 man office’ as it makes Strickland’s arguments sound silly. For those younger folks who might not remember him, he needs to reiterate his leadership role in Congress when he led the legislation to balance the budget. That was not specific enough to be effective. Please send 5 bumper stickers or the circular car stickers to the supporters so that everyone can give to 5 friends. Let’s show huge support around Ohio and people will become more curious to find out what he is about. Get the momentum going!

    Comment by Arlene Fedorchak — July 17, 2010 @ 3:39 pm

  194. John does not need to defend himself re Lehman Brothers really. Nobody is talking about that. Glad to see him hammering on the jobs issue. He should also be hammering on the hypocritibal position the Governor took on the casino gambling issue. He should hammer on the fact that businesses are leaving Ohio in droves due to the lousy business climate, horrible and unduly expensive workers compensation system and a lack of recognition that it is the small businesses that are going to create the jobs in this state to get us out of this mess. The incentives should be focused on small businesses. Focus on NCR leaving Dayton and how long it took for the Governor to reach out to them. Ask them why they went to Georgia with all those Ohio jobs?? Put the NCR execs on camera if you have to.

  195. Straightforward, easy to understand, well done!!

    Comment by Chris — July 17, 2010 @ 3:49 pm

  196. This is much improved over previous ads and necessarily responds to Ted Strickland’s very effective ads tying John to Wallstreet. This would be even more effective if the reference to Strickland were dropped altogether. It would then be positive and constructive rather than negative and much easier to watch.

    Comment by David A. Dibbell — July 17, 2010 @ 3:52 pm

  197. Good Luck!!! It’s great to see you respond to Strickland’s rediculously negative ad which , as the Democrats always do, tries to blame everyone else for the problems without taking responsibility for the devastation that they have created. You are in our prayers. We hope that the state of Ohio. as well as both houses of Congress, will have new leadership as of Jan.1011. God Bless America and let us return to “the home of the free and the land of the brave” where people think for themselves and do not let the federal goverment turn us in to a socialist nation that thinks they know what is best for us and we are too stupid to be able to take care of ourselves and make our own decisions.

    Comment by Mary Dutton — July 17, 2010 @ 3:58 pm

  198. Great POSITIVE ad. Ads need to have class and be conservative if that is what you believe. I want to hear messages on how a person is going to try to FIX various situations and what is the most important to them and then I will determine which candidate fits my greatest needs. I do feel that this ad is positive and does answer part of the questions that Strickland’s ad brings up (mud slinging). What about your leaving your political job for the Lehman job? Is this how you made a larger income? These are my questions that will help decide who I will vote for!! I am very much interested in the education system in and the creation of jobs in Ohio. Thanks for asking for input from the voters, because it makes me feel that you want to represent the PEOPLE not just your own interests!!!! From a concerned Ohioan.

    Comment by Ann — July 17, 2010 @ 4:10 pm

  199. Small and medium size Ohio businesses are being destroyed by outragious Federal and State taxes. Is it no wonder why many of the businesses are closing their doors or leaving Ohio resulting in more job losses? To what extent was your involvement as a Lehman Brothers Board of Directors member? How long? What was your compensation? As Strickland continues to attack your credibility with his ad re Lehman’s, I feel your ad lacks definition re this issue.

    Comment by Rita — July 17, 2010 @ 4:16 pm

  200. good positive ad. Please stay away from Strickland bashing. Keep it about John Kasich and what he is going to do for Ohio. I like this one.

    Comment by Mary Noble — July 17, 2010 @ 4:29 pm

  201. Dear soul,

Although Mr. Kasich did not have to respond to a negative advertisement, his response leaves somewhat to be desired about the financial company that he worked for.

Although Mr. Kasich may run a negative ad against the governor, I prefer it when candidates promote what they are about.

Although jobs and money are important, they are not as important as God’s will. Perhaps some of our problems are due to disobedience to the commandments of God. Obedience to those commandments is not optional, regardless of what the American Supreme Court says about the constitution, which is inferior to the law of God.

I advise you to consult Deuteronomy 28.

    Thanks.

    Comment by Edward McCartney — July 17, 2010 @ 4:31 pm

  202. Congressman John Kasich:

You need to be strong in the following areas:

    1. Come out as a strong supporter of the NRA
and gun rights for every American.

    2. Cut taxes for all businesses. One large step
in their hiring and profitability for the long
    term.

    3. Come out strong in support of our Police and
    Fire Departments.

    4. Come out strong in your efforts to provide the
finest education for our young people.
Both in Kindergarden thru High School and in
    our Colleges and Universities.

    5. Please don’t forget to give strong support to
our brave men and women for their Active
Service throughout the world. And please
don’t forget our brave Veterans too.

    6. You must emphasis the need to get our
    runaway deficit under control.

    7. Ohio needs to take a strong stand against
    the Obama Health Care Plan.

    8. Ohio needs to take a strong stand against
    Immigration.

Each one of these line items is important to
    all Ohioians.

I think if you just come out with a positive attitude and hammer away on each item and let Ohioians know how you plan to handle each area of need, that would be a great step forward and would be very refreshing to the ears of all Ohioians.

May the Lord bless your every step,

    John & Patti Trainer

  203. Ad is straightforward. That is good. Although the rules have changed in politics in that the bad guys are printing their own money. Our money!
Anyhoo, keep our eyes wide open on the voter laws. The VRA and NVRA have strategic sections which can be used to thwart our law-abiding efforts.

    Comment by Becky Lynch — July 17, 2010 @ 4:40 pm

  204. I am glad he commented on the Wall Street connection. It was brief but to the point. John has a positive message and his delivery is matter of fact. Keep them coming…

    Comment by Trude — July 17, 2010 @ 4:41 pm

  205. 1) Remember the ‘contract with America’?
We need John to outline a ‘contract with
Ohio’. Tell us what he WILL do and that
should address all the concerns listed in these posts. DO NOT dwell on Lehman Bros. No one cares anymore. Move on! Put Ted on the defensive with the ‘contract’.
    2) It does not show passion or aggression when you beat the air with your fist while wearing a casual shirt. This does not rouse the voter base. Present the ‘contract’ with sincere and impassioned address and a penetrating glare.
    3) I want John to win. Tying Ted to Pres. Obama’s socialist agenda and John to a ‘contract’ that Ohioans can understand might go a long way toward a governorship.
    4) John must do all he can to make the ‘contract’ a reality when he is elected. If he blinks in addressing the ‘contract’ or fails to implement it, then he will go the way of Gingrich.
    5) If John does not capture the anger of the people of this state and address it with a real battle plan he will not receive more then 43 percent of the vote.

  206. Lehman Brothers connection had me a little concerned. I watch Mr. Kasich when he did show on Fox News

    He seemed knowlegeable.

I met Mr. Stickland in Washington, DC. He was a “block head.” Couldn’t grasp what our concerns were.

  207. I totally agree with others that you should not run from your position at Lehman Brothers. The dems have demonized big business and those in the private sector. We need to set the record straight about their lies and deceit. Other than that the ad was perfect. Very positive and on the point. I hope you do not go negative and fall into Strickland’s web. Just be yourself and tell the truth and success will come to you and to Ohio.

    Comment by Ruth Thompson — July 17, 2010 @ 5:12 pm

  208. It’s about time that a response has been forthcoming to Strickland. Keep it up. I am sorry that my wife and I are unable to donate. We are on fixed incomes and are struggling. Keep pounding.

  209. Hey, thanks for actually reading my email and taking my advice! This is exactly the ad I recommended to you several weeks ago! Now, . . about that staff position, . . I am available, work cheap, have a strong grass roots, conservative view, and a solid mastery of the English language with enough Southeastern Ohio insight to help bring it home! We need to grab, and then rapidly widen the lead from Strickland. I suggest you present a solution to the Education funding mess that’s been festering since the court ruled our system unconstitutional, ( how many years ago ), might be coupled with a tax system overhaul to completely confound the opposition. Its a longstanding grumble that might link with a pro-growth taxation plan that kills two birds with one stone and leaves Strickland standing slack-jawed, with no argument beyond,”it’ll never work”, which he won’t be able to prove. I don’t claim to actually have such a plan, just know that the candidate who can present one is a slam – dunk!

  211. Good ad. Short and to the point. Clears up Lehmann connection – great about 2 man office. How about something on what you are going to do for Ohio? More about where Strickland got the money to “balance the budget”

    Comment by Sarah Fabian — July 17, 2010 @ 5:33 pm

  212. Good commercial hope it makes up for hanging out with thrash like Newt. Strictland shouldn’t be hard to beat, point out how Federal department of education has bankrupted Ohio schools and we need Ohio education and keep our education funds. I don’t believe you’re a good canidate but still best running.

    Comment by David Davis — July 17, 2010 @ 5:48 pm

  213. Thank you for setting the record straight about Lehman Bros. When I first heard the Democratic comments on this my first thought was “Oh no”. I needed to hear what you had to say about this. America is so lacking in someone who will speak truth. No mud slinging please. I believe we are all tired of the dirt that is thrown around during elections. May God bless your efforts.

    Comment by Judy Froehlich — July 17, 2010 @ 5:59 pm

  214. I am glad to hear this ad I would like an ad that says how you worked to balance budgets and made Ohio an attractive place to have a business and to work.

  215. The obvious, the truth, the facts, etc, must not be taken for granted. They must be expounded again and again to counter the extreme leftist bias of most of the media. Speak directly to the poeple, do not let the media set the tone of your campaign. Stick to the main values that have worked so well in the past. Point out the oppostition’s flaws and then dwell on your strengths. Keep the focus of your campaign on your message. Do not not allow the opposition to set the stage of debate……they are not listening in any case. The flag-burners, socialists and haters of the family structure will not be converted. Go for the wider American audience. Semper Fi.

  216. Little too much head motion, but it may actually add to believability. I’m glad to see him address Lehman accusation, and an office in Columbus, not off somewhere in NY, was good to know, a good point to make. Many of us work for large companies whose execs to things beyond our control.

    Comment by Terry Smith — July 17, 2010 @ 6:40 pm

  217. A good ad. I would stress three things in the coming months:
    1) You were chairman of the House Budget Committee in 1994, and passed the Balanced Budget Act in 1997
    2) Stress your family roots and upbringing, I believe your parents were Democrats, correct?
    3) Talk specifically about Ohio’s incredibly high taxes. Last time I checked we were one of the top 10 states for overall taxes (income, local, property, etc.). You may not want to give specifics about reducing our tax burden, but true conservatives want to hear you say something, ANYTHING, about it.

  219. Good message as far as it goes. What you are going to do as governor must be spelled out right away. Be specific or you are just playing defense to the Democrats, set agenda. Talk about Strickland’s union friendly environment in Ohio and how it hurts private business.

I understand the need for defense against attack ads. You got that accomplished in the first 20 seconds.

The last 10 seconds told potential supporters that jobs are the product of some formula of government, not less government. That’s not going to cut it in 2010.

Keep working at it, and if you’d like further input, I am available to help!

Is anyone else annoyed by that ‘knuckle point’? It looks affected/unnatural/pc. Let your hands move naturally. It will engender trust.

I am a fan of yours, Mr. Kasich! I heard you on FOXNEWS many times and have been impressed with your apparent integrity. Keep it up, and keep it positive.

  224. Good commerical. You need to get that on ad on local Ohio TV…John you need to come up to Toledo area and talk to people. I know you have talked to Brian Wilson on WSPD at times. plus you need to start targeting ( figuratively speaking) miltary people in the state and at the bases. Alot of votes there and the younger people don’t know anything about you..

    Comment by Randy Studer — July 17, 2010 @ 7:54 pm

  225. Great, timely, and so necessary. The opposition has been setting you up as the bad guy. Good job.

In the future, I’d refrain from mentioning your opponents mame. Refer to him as the “other guy”. Don’t advertise for him by using his name.

Always remember : the secret to good advertising is association. People will like your casual, yet informed, positive and confident style. Keep pushing jobs and lower taxes. That will do it. Don’t give him anything to hit back at you.

  226. I have a problem with the ad accepting the arguement Lehman Brothers was bad and distancing itself from said argument. I think the campaign should embrace the good the company did while recognizing the bad and spinning it to reflect what John would of done different if he was in charge and by the way here is what I will do for Ohio.

I personally am tired of leadership that ducks and then leads. How about bold fresh leadership that accepts all the good and bad in leading and understanding the people.

Nobody is perfect and one can’t have life both ways but for some odd reason we try to sell it that way in the selling.

    Good Luck!

  227. Great Ad! Stay away from attacking Strickland and concentrate on your positive plans. Include consulting with Indiana governor who has been successful…people are tired of the negative and want to hear what you have done, and plan to do….people I know dont care about what party you are in they care about the person, integrity, and what they can really do in government

    Comment by Debbie Sears — July 17, 2010 @ 8:48 pm

  228. ” We can turn Ohio around ,” resonates. If Ted Strictland makes a hard hitting critisism, you should reply with specifics. If he infers that you should be ashamed of your Lehman experience, reply with specifics. Not just a blanket denial. People want SPECIFICS -DETAIL. Anything less smacks of insincerity and hubris. I believe you can do a better job of managing our states business than has Mr. Strictland.

    Comment by gary blakeman — July 17, 2010 @ 8:56 pm

  229. I think you should concentrate on changing bad ideas – not on “bad Strickland.” The Strickland energy policy is a slap in the face to free market principles and limited government. It was a bad idea from a well intentioned governor.

States already in debt competing with one another to cut taxes for one industry or another within a sector (special interest market manipulation) – is another BAD IDEA.

A progressive capital equipment investment tax credit that rewards in state content more than out of state and international content could be beneficial to numerous levels of industrial development across all industries without creating any special favors.

    also…..But I remember, John Kasick being a
founding father of the “contract with America”
The Lib’s called it the contract against America”
and it seems it was never challaged, although
it was great to me…That is a commerical that
    that needs to be repeted…..Honesty.

    Comment by Eric — July 17, 2010 @ 9:14 pm

  231. How much more specific can you get in a 1-2 minute ad? The negative remarks and comments on this board about wanting to hear more about this, that and the other thing obviously have no clue as to what money it takes to run an ad, and the proper way to address ONE item at a time. I think this ad is simple, gets to the main point, and explains in a dignified manner the accusations made against you. You’re not defending the actions of Lehman Bros. It was a job and you were one of many, just as you explained. Strickland’s treading water and getting tired fast and has no real accomplishments to stand on. It doesn’t matter if you’re Republican or Democrat, it’s time for change and Strickland needs to go NOW.

    Comment by Jamie Petree — July 17, 2010 @ 9:25 pm

  232. I am a retired Army Officer, small business owner, and working a second career as an educator. In almost 40 years I have yet to see any taxes go down. So I am not easily sold with political rhetoric. I like the fact the add is not slanderous. But, I have not seen or heard anything yet that convinces me a leadership change at this time is good for Ohio. I have followed Mr. Kasich’s career over the years; was sorry to see him step out of politics and glad he has returned to the political scene. Unfortunately, he has not yet won me over for this campaign. I need more than promises at this point in my life.

    Comment by Kevin Barreras — July 17, 2010 @ 9:44 pm

  233. I think it has the right tone and balance. Addresses Stricklands smear ad but gives positive picture of what Kasich will do. Not sure how you do this in 30 seconds, but everyone, inlcuding Strickland says they will create jobs. We have heard that in the Ohio rust belt for the last 5 governors. What can Kasich do, espeically in the face of international trade agreements and national economy and a lack of Presidential leadership.

    Comment by Mike — July 17, 2010 @ 9:46 pm

  234. Great Ad! It sets the record straight. So you really were not THE MANAGING DIRECTOR of Lehman just one of 700. Puts Ted’s ads in a new light.

  235. Dear Friends,

How do I refute the information listed below?

    Jim Miller

    Folks,

If you have not already heard, the NRA rated Governor Strickland A+. Whats even more impressive is that Strickland was the first endorsement handed out by the NRA this election cycle. That’s how critical Ohio is! Strickland of course was endorsed for Governor over John Kasich, at times Kasich has has worked against our 2nd Amendment and hunting rights. As a Congressman, Kasich voted in favor of the 1994 Clinton Gun ban, and recruited the Republican votes necessary for passage, he has supported bills containing restrictions on handgun sales, and most recently has supported the same legislation, “Mayor Bloomberg” is currently pushing to close gun shows. Kasich has even voted against bills that would divert tax dollars generated in part from ammo sales, to support hunting development programs.
I have provided you all with the NRA press release.

Remember I rely on all of you for your assistance, as my eyes and ears concerning whats going on in your part of Ohio’s 8th Congressional District and beyond. Email me, and let me know what your hearing. All of you Miami, Cincinnati, and other University Students, keep us all informed on what your hearing. Those of you in the northern part of the District, Troy, Beavercreek, Vandalia let me know what your hearing and what you need from me.

    Thanks, Sean.

Fairfax, Va. — The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is endorsing Ohio Governor Ted Strickland for re-election in the November 2nd general election.
“Governor Strickland is a steadfast supporter of gun owners and hunters. Whether as a congressman or as Governor, he has not been afraid to stand up for the Second Amendment even when under pressure from national elites,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman of NRA-PVF. “That is why NRA-PVF is pleased to endorse Governor Strickland for re-election.”
Throughout his political career, Ted Strickland has demonstrated a commitment to protecting the Second Amendment. As Governor, he signed into law several key measures including: “castle doctrine” reform legislation and a measure to eliminate unreasonable restrictions on concealed carry permit holders. As a U.S. Representative, Strickland voted to stop reckless lawsuits aimed at bankrupting the American firearms industry and opposed legislation aimed at shutting down gun shows. He also opposed the 1994 ban on commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms that Congress allowed to expire in 2004.
Governor Strickland’s steadfast support for the right to keep and bear arms has earned him an “A+” rating and endorsement by NRA-PVF.
“We will be urging every gun owner and hunter in Ohio to vote Ted Strickland for Governor on November 2nd,” concluded Cox.
Chris W. Cox is executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. He also serves as chairman of NRA-PVF. The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund is responsible for political candidate rankings. These are based on candidate voting records, public statements and responses to NRA-PVF questionnaires.

  236. John, Be positive and state what you will do. Address the smears as they come, but do it quickly and don’t appear defensive. Tough challenge.

The people want to know how you are going to turn around Ohio. Discuss how you’re going to support the private sector and balance the Ohio budget and what has to be reduced to do that. Be honest with the people. We’ve got enough dishonesty in Washington to last us a lifetime.

Character and honesty will get you elected but you need to be specific.

The truth is the answer. Give it to us.

  238. Good ad, but people I know are anxious to hear the SPECIFICS of Mr. Kasich’s plan for Ohio. If we eliminate the income tax, what spending will be cut. Don’t be afraid to lead.

    Comment by Jody Seward — July 17, 2010 @ 10:45 pm

  239. Good defense of attack ad and explanation of your connection to Lehman Brothers. Straightforward.

BUT it needs some concrete ideas of how to create jobs in Ohio. Lower taxes on business community? Less regulation? Help small businesses? Lower minimum wage so beginning workers (teens) can learn work habits?

    WE WANT TO KNOW HOW!

    Comment by Pat Papoi — July 17, 2010 @ 10:51 pm

  240. This ad is long overdue. Kasich is not a well recognized name with the general populace & the Strickland ad gave a negative light to the Kasich name. I don’t even hear enough to know where he stands on important issues like the 2nd ammendment, education & it’s funding (which right now sits on the back of the home owner),taxes, and as the mother of a police officer, his strong support for police & fire. If you do not get it out there the Dems will continue to destroy our state.

  244. This is a great commercial. Direct to the point. I love the response to the Leeman Brothers attack. Many politicians usually ignore attacks and when they don’t address it directly, they seem guilty. This is great.

  245. I liked the ad. I totally disagree with the gentleman about changing your views to suit the NRA. Isn’t this the same NRA that has endorced Harry Reid in Nevada? Really? Now we now that even the NRA’s vote can be purchased. I hope you are elected John. We need a Governor that can at least reach a budget and know what to do with it.

    Comment by Anita Strauss — July 18, 2010 @ 1:12 am

  246. Good message…but too short, you need to start pumping these things out at a faster pace, especially up here in northern Ohio where not enough people know who you are yet.we need to make sure Tard Strickland is a one term Governor!

    Comment by Mark Evan — July 18, 2010 @ 1:22 am

  247. Most people I talk with are turned-off by Washington -speak. It is evasive and non-commital. John has no of this in the ad and that is refreshing. It also instills trust and confidence is his message.

    Comment by Richard L. Zielasko — July 18, 2010 @ 5:47 am

  248. “400,000 Jobs lost on Strickland’s watch” – “on his watch?” How did the policies of the Strickland administration cause the loss of 400,000 jobs?

Informed Ohio voters would like to have more specifics. Exactly what changes does Mr. Kasich plan on proposing? How will these changes be passed into law? As we all realize, no governor has a magic wand – and cannot simply change or enact laws. Please share the details.

    Comment by Keith — July 18, 2010 @ 6:28 am

  249. Hurray! You are finally introducing yourself to the state. Amazingly most people don’t know you. So instead of running adv. with people wispering about the gov. it’s good to see you talk about the issues head on. Up to now you have allowed Strickland define who you are.

    Comment by Mark Iacona — July 18, 2010 @ 6:52 am

  250. Very good, short and to the point. Keep away from the negative campaigning and focus on what you will do that will have a positive impact on the state. Make sure you mention your support for the 2nd ammendment, very important.
Keep up the good work. Jeff

    Comment by Jeff Davis — July 18, 2010 @ 7:28 am

  251. OK, but I think that saying what you will do different than your opponent to solve the “jobs” problem has more impact. Everyone running says they want “better or more”. How, is what makes the difference. The quick addressing of the Lehmann issue was good.

    Comment by Frank L — July 18, 2010 @ 7:46 am

  252. A good effective Ad to address the long running negative Ad against John. Keep it short, keep it simple, keepit positive!

  253. Mr. Kasich:
    Content: strong
    Delivery: less “head movement”
It seemed to be a very white ad.

My first experience with you was in 1983, when I interviewed with you and your staff for a nomination to the US Naval Academy….thank you for the nomination.

I hope that we can get the message out and have a new resident on Parkview Ave (I grew up 4 houses North of there during the Celeste days), but you all will still call Westerville “home,” right?

    Comment by andrew brown — July 18, 2010 @ 7:55 am

  254. Since when do we apologize for success? I don’t know this country anymore. It’s inhabited by people who fear that which makes America great.

Be proud to have worked at Lehman Bros. That populist nonsense works on zombies and people who are incapable of a single critical thought.

    Comment by Brian D — July 18, 2010 @ 8:37 am

  255. Mr. Kasich. Drop this commercial. you come off as agitated and defensive, like you have something to hide. I would use high cost forms of media for getting out your vision for the future and most importantly, how you are going to achieve that vision. This spot should ask the question… Governor, What’s your plan? Grossly distorting the facts will not bring jobs to Ohio, Do you even have a plan?

    Comment by Bill Bohman — July 18, 2010 @ 8:54 am

  256. Clear message and to the point.

    Comment by Steve Reinhard — July 18, 2010 @ 9:30 am

  257. Making job for Ohioians would bring us a step closer to being a better Ohio. What gets me is all the foreignors that come in and take jobs away from Americans. Is there something we can do about that? American companies should be hiring Americans that can speak English and be able to converse with currant and potential customers. John, you are on the right track. Keep it up. It was a pleasure meeting you at the dinner in Fairfield, Oh.

    Comment by Barb Dudley — July 18, 2010 @ 9:38 am

  258. I like the ad, but I think you need to explore your congressional record. Voters 35 and under may not be aware of your work on balancing the budget when you were in congress. This is important because the economy and Ohio’s budget deficit will be foremost in most voters’ minds. Elsie T.

    Comment by Elsie Tarczy — July 18, 2010 @ 10:28 am

  259. Kasich has a lot of work to do to rid his image of being assosiciated with Lehman. People over 65–even stauch repub. like me–can’t forget $ lost. He needs to disclose his tax records & tell more about his life & specifically what he has done for the “little guy” He has an image problem right now. The ad touches on his job with Lehman & that’s a start, but in the whole ad he sounds defensive and confrontational. Be a little more friendly or he will continue to turn people off. He has to win me back somehow.

  262. So glad there’s a new ad. Like others’ comments, so many don’t know who John is. The more positive he can be about himself all the better.

Also, the shirt I’m wearing for Kasick/Taylor doesn’t have that he’s running for Governor of OH. I may have to write it on the shirt.

John has to bein the news more often promoting himself. WE NEED HIM!

  263. This ad doesn’t specifically give John’s position on current issues. I recently read Rob Portman’s .pdf on his positions and I feel I really know his stance on the many issues we face. In this day and age, I feel much better voting for a candidate that has gone on the record with his or her set of beliefs and values. Also NumbersUSA has a very specific survey about illegal immigration. Please have John fill out this survey so he can be counted to help solve this big problem.
    Thank you.

    Comment by Doug Bahun — July 18, 2010 @ 12:47 pm

  264. It’s about time he responded. Now he need to go on the attack and keep it up. With this economy, he should be ahead by 20 points!
Also, keep it simple. “I didn’t run L-Brothers, I ran a two person office in Columbus”. The title Managing Director may think it is a bigger position.

    Comment by Tim — July 18, 2010 @ 1:07 pm

  265. Good brief advertisement. It’s a start. Toledo Blade editorial of 7/18 comparing Kasich & Strickland on future Ohio budget hole made it sound like they were equally vague on how to resolve the issue. Kasich needs to do more than defend himself. He should differentiate himself by showing what he was able to do in the U.S. House. He has a track record of achievement that deserves full recognition and credit.

  267. Both my husband and I viewed the ad. It is a good response to the negative Strickland ad that has played for such a long time now. Please, on future ad’s spell out for the public what the plan is for creating jobs, a little more detail on the education plans, economic development and how in the world will this state budget ever get balanced. Acknowledge that the current job loss in Ohio was inherited in part by forces at play across the nation, but stronger leadership to fix it is what isneeded and has been lacking. Stay as positive as possible. You come across quite well in person and on the television. Use it to your advantage.

    Comment by Christine Dietsch — July 18, 2010 @ 2:34 pm

  268. Two simple questions! 1. Do you support the NRA and 2. Do you support the 2nd Amendment? Hopefully BOTH !!! If not yes to both questions then WHY NOT? Your answers will inform alot of true AMERICAN VOTERS IN THIS GREAT STATE OF OHIO…..elk

    Comment by Karen Davenport — July 18, 2010 @ 3:54 pm

  270. This is the response we have been waiting for, but the limitation imposed by a 30-second ad causes the message to lose some effectiveness. I don’t think Strickland can be blamed for Ohio’s job losses, but he certainly can be blamed for not having any sensible plan for dealing with Ohio’s miserable economic climate.

    Comment by Paul Matia — July 18, 2010 @ 4:50 pm

  271. I’m a Republican, but I believe Taft and Blackwell did Ohio a great disservice. That’s why Strickland was elected so easily in ’06. John has to demonstrate how he would not be another Taft. He needs to state how he would bring jobs back to Ohio, where he stands on taxes, the Second Amendment and Ohio’s concealed-carry law, and the illegal-immigration issue. As for the latter, be honest and don’t try to court the hispanic vote — they don’t vote Republican anyway. In short, tell us where you stand on the ISSUES, and forget about the Lehmann Brothers criticism. Negativity never won an election. Let Ted go negative all he wants — he’s just giving you more votes. Finallly, GET OUT OF COLUMBUS! You’ve got to become better known outside of Franklin County! Otherwise, voters are going to be saying “John who?”

    Comment by Ed Novak — July 18, 2010 @ 5:19 pm

  272. I am a Republican and will be voting for you, but if I am put in the position of having to defend my choice how can I answer the following question? Talking please from the “no spin zone” – Why do you, John Kasich, think the many jobs have been lost in Ohio during Gov. Strickland’s term? What budgets have you balanced, taxes have you cut and jobs have you created? Specifically how do you see jobs coming back to Ohio? Thanks

  276. I would de-emphasize the Lehman Bros connection because most people don’t know about it and don’t care. Stick with positive position ads like Rob Portman is airing. Present solutions to government spending and job losses in Ohio.

I have a Kasich sticker on my car but I have never seen another on any car in Akron. I fear Kasich name recognition in Summit and Cuyahoga Counties is weak.

    Comment by Bill Turner — July 18, 2010 @ 9:08 pm

  277. Great ad. I think that it is important to shed light on the truth and to never let others get away with lies, but at the same time, not make a big deal about it. This was perfect. John has a great smile … I think it would help, in the closing argumenst here, to give a bigger smile. Let folks know that he’s a nice guy that wants to help us all out and that we do have something to smile about… our recovery. Not that he should smile about the problems, but smile when he talks about overcoming them.

    Comment by Melanie — July 18, 2010 @ 9:22 pm

  278. John, I wish the Republicans had a couple of junk yard dogs like James Carville and David Axelrod who could put some fight in their party. The ad is good, but not hard-enough hitting. You need to articulate some specific ideas so you can clearly separate yourself from Strickland. Don’t let him dictate the content of your ads by stooping to address each of his criticisms of you. Let people know you are a candidate who has actually worked in the private sector. Have you ever created jobs? Have you had to fund a payroll? Deal with bureaucracy? Pay bills? Let people know HOW you will improve the business climate in the state that has come to be known as “NOhio.” And come out swinging! One thing the Dems can’t stand is facts. They can;t argue against them.

    Comment by Susan Moore — July 18, 2010 @ 9:35 pm

  279. Excellent. You need more exposure up here in Cuyahoga County. Please address the NRA endosement. Your position on this?

    Comment by Helen — July 18, 2010 @ 9:43 pm

  280. Nice look to it. It seems to start out slamming Strickland. Isn’t that the very thing John accuses Strickland of doing to him? It also comes across as defensive “I didn’t run Leahman Brothers”.

Also John states he’ll balance the budget and create jobs, but of course he doesn’t have time to explain how.

    Comment by Ralph Antolino Jr. — July 18, 2010 @ 10:13 pm

  281. I think he comes off as a little too aggressive. He makes good points, but don’t mention Strickland, and tell how you’ll bring jobs.

    Comment by Miles Hoehn — July 19, 2010 @ 6:26 am

  282. This is a start. But balancing the budget will require spending cuts.

Government sector wages are much higher than private sector and this needs to addressed.

    Go for it!

    Comment by Thomas Swain — July 19, 2010 @ 7:40 am

  283. As a fan of John’s political career and his hosting Heartland on FOX, I would say to emphasize his working on the Balanced Budget Amendment on his watch in Congress and how he was on the team that did so and he was a “term limits advocate” since he walked the talk and left Congress after his terms…I think he is a stand-up guy!!!! I will be so proud when OHIO elects him as their new governor! I am also a fan of Mary Taylor…I campaigned for her previously…great partnership!

    Comment by Sherry Ogrodnik — July 19, 2010 @ 7:49 am

  284. Great ad! You need to make a series of ads hitting each of the problems. Use the same format, 15 second is perfect! You can buy more frequence with shorter ads.

    Comment by Joe Panzica — July 19, 2010 @ 8:07 am

  285. The only way a government can create jobs is by getting out of the private sectors way.

    Comment by walt klein — July 19, 2010 @ 8:16 am

  286. John:
Are you pro-life? Jobs are important. A balanced budget is a must. Reduce services? Lets start by reducing services to those who would murder the unborn. Abortion is no answer for Ohio, and God will never bless a state that helps to provide a service like that. So.. where do you stand?

    Comment by Kerry Becker — July 19, 2010 @ 9:15 am

  287. Great spot. I love the direct approach. I’d like to see John address lower taxes as a means to job creation. This has a much more positive feel than the previous spots.

    Comment by Jeannine Reese — July 19, 2010 @ 9:22 am

  288. I applaud your focus on jobs. Strickland and Fisher cannon hide from their job killing policies. Reduce governemnt jobs and benefits and bring business back to Ohio. Ohio is ranked 47th in terms of business friendly policies. Government doesn’t make jobs, business does. Let’s make Ohio business friendly again!

    Comment by Bill Dierker — July 19, 2010 @ 10:22 am

  289. 1)I like the short straight forward ad. You address Lehman Bros. issue.
    2) Use your contract with America experience, compare the unemployment and financial situation from then to now.
    3) Please contact and LISTEN to teachers on some ways to help with education issues in OHIO. (At least 25+% support conservative points of view).

GOOD LUCK! WE ARE WORKING FOR YOU!!

    Comment by Candace Messerly — July 19, 2010 @ 10:31 am

  290. Finally, an answer in person to all the SEIU and other labor funded ads. Well done and to the point.
Don’t forget to highlight the important work John did as a Congressman working TOGETHER in a bipartisan manner with a Democratic president to get the country’s budge balanced in the 90′s.
Mr. average citizen wants to see their government work and they are tired of the endless bickering and back biting. Mr. average citizen knows intrinsically that the current spending spree is not good for the short term OR the long term and they are concerned. We can save many dollars in the State budget by shrinking government and eliminating overlapping jurisdictions. We don’t need to do it in one giant sweep but over time and by attrition. We have to start somewhere.
Stay positive. I like the new ad!!

    Comment by Michael Keenan — July 19, 2010 @ 10:44 am

  291. Great ad – setting the record straight! This is the number one most important thing our Republican candidates MUST do in this next election is speak up, stand up to the liberals and set records straight and set the course of our state and country back to free enterprise, low taxes and freedom to speak the truth – no matter who does not like it!!

    Comment by Lori — July 19, 2010 @ 10:46 am

  292. Good, honest sounding ad. Recommend being as specific as you can in campaign ads with honesty in short supply these days.

    Comment by John Corbett — July 19, 2010 @ 11:03 am

  293. My company worked with John while he was at Lehman. He should stress that in his role as Managing Director, he brought investment dollars to Ohio for Ohio companies and Ohio job creation. Through the $25 Million investment we received, we recruited high level people from Chicago, Raleigh, NC, and Maryland in addition to fellow Ohioans.
Let’s keep the good work up!!!

    Comment by William Zimlich — July 19, 2010 @ 11:45 am

  294. TO BEV HANSON
Great remarks Lehman work is Okay to do
    Hell everyone has to work

    Comment by Jack Green — July 19, 2010 @ 11:51 am

  295. Very good ad. Stick to central message about loss of jobs under Strickland. John must be careful NOT to be defensive. He can stress his record and background. Nice job!

    Comment by Paul Gelacek — July 19, 2010 @ 1:57 pm

  296. Ted Strickland made his career as a politician. He needs to retire now.

    Comment by Mike — July 19, 2010 @ 2:18 pm

  297. I’m glad that John spoke to the negative ad about Lehman Brothers but I think he needs to be more specific about what his job was. As for his record, again I think he needs to be more specific about how he balanced the budget, cut taxes and created jobs. If he does that, he’ll have a record that’s tough to beat.

    Comment by Jan Haberman — July 19, 2010 @ 2:30 pm

  298. I thought it was a great ad. Short, sweet, and to the point. It spells out what his roll was and what he wants to accomplish now. They both have my full support as always.

    Comment by Dave Cooper — July 19, 2010 @ 5:28 pm

  299. I’ve supported John since he ran for Congress. I hope you are elected! We need you! I HATE smear ads (the Dems age old specialty)! Please do give us a few more details of your plans. And PLEASE tell me you support the 2nd Amendment! That’s IMPORTANT to us as a country. By the way, I also agree with shorter term limits and social security for them, and that they ALL should have the same health care plan as they voted in for us!

    Comment by Theresa Wolverton — July 19, 2010 @ 5:37 pm

  300. Great Ad, but you might want to change the wording”tare me down”, maybe something like “make me responsible for the collapse of Lehmand Brothers, that’s rediculous”!

    Comment by Ron — July 19, 2010 @ 6:27 pm

  301. I like the ads, but I must admit that I never see any advertisements on television with John Kasich. I have only seen one with the small group of workers explaining the loss of jobs under Governor Strickland. I want to see from candidate Kasich a bold, creative plan of vision that takes the human and economic resources of this state and uses them to establish a new economic reality in Ohio. With large population and educational centers located so closely together, technological and transportation links (ex. bullet trains) should be connecting every part of this state together to create one economic powerhouse. My wish is to have a governor that is willing to join every corner of this state together to create an economic dynamo.

    Comment by Rick Bumgarner — July 19, 2010 @ 6:44 pm

  302. More please -This is what we need – what are you for? More like Chris Christy in NJ – when they lie, get it out there what the lie is and the truth. You know the drive-by media won’t do their job. How about a Contract for Ohio, like the 1994 national edition? get as many conservatives as possible to get across the message the government is not the answer – it is the problem!

    Comment by Dean — July 19, 2010 @ 7:05 pm

  303. Great job, quick and to the point…. Next add should address the growing school funding crisis in Ohio, yet another failed promise of the current administration. Our school districts failed levy in May caused one of our schools to be closed and 41 teachers were let go. Children are our future and if you cannot give them the best foundation through education then we are all in trouble. School district is Big Walnut in Sunbury, Oh. I would love to hear what John has in store concering education.

    Comment by Kandi Smith — July 19, 2010 @ 9:58 pm

  304. What I liked most about the ad was the tone. It was upbeat and a matter of fact explanation of his involvement with Lehman Bros. If the Democrats thought their ad would force John to apologize for employment at Lehman Bros., they miscalculated. In this age of “mea culpas,” I’m glad John showed strength and not weakness. Keep it up!

    Comment by Larry Nichols — July 20, 2010 @ 6:17 am

  305. The ad was good, however, we need much more follow-up on the 2nd amendment rights issue.

    Comment by J. Greening — July 20, 2010 @ 7:31 am

  306. Dear Ms. Hanson:
The ad is very effective and clears up details from the opposition. I represent a newspaper that is mailed monthly to 11,500 residents an additional 500 copies distributed ro businesses in Bedford, Bedford Heights, Oakwood Village and Walton Hills. I would encourage Mr. Kassich to consider writing an article and even purchasing a campaign ad or two. This will be a tough election and we represent the media is a ctitical section of Cleveland.

    Comment by David Shriber — July 20, 2010 @ 8:29 am

  307. Dear John

First off, I want to pledge my support for your upcoming election. You are going to make a great Governor of Ohio and dare I say, somewhere in the future, President of the United States of America.

I do want to point out that I don’t agree with the strategy you are taking in your campaign. I am a creative director at a Cincinnati Ad Agency. I have help build brands here in Cincinnati for over 30 years. I’m good at what I do and my clients pay me well for my services and advice.

    Here’s my beef.

It’s a privilege to come into a consumer’s living room and interrupt their personal space and time with your commercials. We the people do not like ANY sort of negative advertising. I find it to be insulting and a scourge on my industry. Everyone wants the truth, not distortions or disclaimer-ed research results.

You need to lose the talk about Strickland, and the gimmick job counter. we know he blows.

Please tell us who you really are, what you truly believe in and how you plan on fixing the states broken economy. It’s as easy as that, John, we need a leader that will lead us in the right direction and get out of the way. The state government needs to be trimmed down to a manageable size, de-unionized, term limited and made to serve the people & business that create the jobs. Small businesses like mine are the key, we being mandated out of business my local, state and federal taxes and regulations.

I know who you are, you’re like me, a family man that loves his god, his family, and his country.
We want to go back to the basics that our founder’s laid out for us.

So get of the negative Strickland job counter off your website, it’s stupid.
Make it easy to find our your core beliefs and your ideas. Not rhetoric.
I like the job forum idea part but post the great ideas daily on Facebook, Twitter and your site.

We’ll take care of Obama in 2012, your job is to win the election with a positive uplifting campaign with solid ideas(like the Contract with America). Negative advertising is s downer that no one want in their living room.

Call me, I’ll help you win, all you have to do is ask.

  308. I think the ad is a terrible one for the following reasons:

    1) Talks about Lehman brothers for 15 seconds, and then bounces into his record in government for 15 secons. It should be two distinct and seperate commercials. There is no connect between the two thoughts.
    2) He looks like a bobblehead doll for the first 15 seconds…very distracting to the viewer.

I hope that this is not run on TV…I am certain that the campaign can come up with something better than this.

    Comment by Doug Smorag — July 20, 2010 @ 1:14 pm

  309. I like it very much : )

    Comment by Angela — July 20, 2010 @ 1:44 pm

  310. Great spot. Neutralizes the Strickland attack ads in less than 30 seconds with straight talk.
This Ohio election will be just about job creation.

    Comment by Cliff Eggleton — July 20, 2010 @ 1:51 pm

  311. I lke the ad and endorse your cadidacy, but some people are concerned that the NRA & Buckeye Firearms is endorsing Ted Strickland. People need to know where you are standing on the issue.

    Comment by Anny Sperry — July 20, 2010 @ 1:53 pm

  312. I think John needs to defend himself to a point (Lehman Bros.), however, I also think he needs to say and stress more about what he is going to do overall for the great state of Ohio.
There is SO much to fix and we need to start fixing as soon as he takes office. (i.e, get rid of all the dead weight and incompetents just for starters)
I’m a small business owner and I’m slowing dying what with taxes, workman’s comp and lack of business BECAUSE of the poor economy.People want to hear that a candidate understands and knows what the major concerns are and that his is willing to fight/work to get us back on track -making us all feel more secure and stable. Most people do not feel that now-we are worried about money ( and lack of )as well and our overall security .
We need GOOD leadership for the state of Ohio.

    Comment by Louise Ritley — July 20, 2010 @ 2:30 pm

  313. I like that you focus on JOBS. Overall I wish you were tapping into the conservative passion of the Tea Party in Ohio. By playing it in the middle and safe, you are missing a ground swell of enthusiasm from grass roots Constitutional Conservatives who are focused on fiscal responsibility and constitutional government.

    Comment by Melanie Harrison — July 20, 2010 @ 3:04 pm

  314. John,
First, I want to state that I supported you as governor before you made your formal announcement to enter the gubernatorial race; however your campaign has been a disapointment and if I were in your shoes I’d be looking for a new campaign manager. If you don’t receive new, or additional, help on how to reach Ohioans you will end up with another badly run campaign — same as what happened to McCain during the presidential elections.

The new commercial you want to run doesn’t leave a “good-feel” after watching it. The director should have told you to quit bouncing your head all over the place. I’m sure your words were sincere; however the tone is negative and comes close to scolding — something you don’t want to do in TV commercial.

People want answers to accusations against you and the story needs to be told in a non-threatening way and with examples of why it’s not true.

With the way the DEM’s are ruining this country the polls should be a landslide in your favor and you’ve barely kept your head above water so far. You are not a household name (yet) and I don’t believe your new TV commercial will win many votes.

Find someone that can help you to appeal to the people. Find someone that can help you to become a household name.

I wish you luck and hope you win — but I truly believe your campaign strategy needs a makeover.

    Comment by Dale Anne — July 20, 2010 @ 3:16 pm

  315. Yes, Mr. Kasich is required to address an ad that attacks him in a manner that describes an action as possibly criminal. Yes, address the issue, short and sweet and put it to bed. I love this ad!

I would suggest that Mr. Kasich in some way, state the following – I will not waste the Ohio taxpayers time, or intellect on silly ads. We are in serious/critical times, and Ohioan’s are looking for serious solutions. “That’s my mission, and I’ve got solutions!”

    Comment by Patricia Miller — July 20, 2010 @ 3:33 pm

  316. I believe the ad addresses the Lehman Bros. issues of the past and focuses on the State’s problem with departing jobs. It hits the issues without being overly negative towards your opponent.

Now some of your past positions on gun laws need to be straightened out.

    Comment by C. Michael Miller — July 20, 2010 @ 4:20 pm

  317. As a conservative and an N.R.A. member, I still see no evidence of John’s support of our second amendment rights. He voted to support the Clinton gun restrictions. Unless John joins and supports the N.R.A., my vote, reluctantly, will go to Strickland.

    Comment by Virginia Gray — July 20, 2010 @ 4:52 pm

  318. john, i am so very proud of you and so glad to be able to say “i knew you when!”

these ads are great! don’t ever be afraid to show your true self, the passion, the commitment, the intellect, the genuine grasp of just what our home state is, what it means to the country to have a strong ohio and what it means to the world to have a strong usa. show your love and grasp of what we are and what we have to offer the world.

do your stint on broad and high streets, then hook up with rob portman and head to pennsylvania avenue where you belong. change the direction of our home state. get out in front of the parade and call the beat, then take your strength and truth to washington…just like you did when you ran my campaign efforts at ohio state university where you sharpened your tools of leadership for the real work you do as you got responsible student leadership in motion at that great institution!

i’ll send you more of my money even though i live in kentucky now (wife’s rule) and i’ll try to help in other ways too because i truly believe you will use it to our overall best advantage…
and because i really like mary’s smile!

the truth is always so very beautiful, isn’t it?

    give ‘em hell, john!

  319. Hi John,
I liked the ad. Thanks for clearing up your role with Lehman Bros.
Today I heard radio talk show host, Mike Trivasano on 1100 AM in Cleveland endorsing you. He would like to have you on his show. He has an enormous following not just in Cleveland, but all over the country. He LOVES that you are a friend of big business and wealthy business men. It would be in your best interest to be on his show. His ratings are extremely high and he has a vast listening audience. I agree with others who have stated that you are not well known in Northeast Ohio, and Mike’s show would give you instant recognition and credibility.

Just an aside. When you speak, I would like to see you be calmer. You have a tendency to speak too quickly with a certain amount of “panic” in your voice. You also do a lot of finger pointing – literally – which I find offensive. Please understand that I really like you and I am offering this as helpful advice.

    Comment by Kathy Zimmerman — July 20, 2010 @ 6:22 pm

  320. I have only one question. How do you stand on gun control? your answer will greatrly influnce my wife and I’s selection on who we vote for. Of course no answer will tip our decision on who to vote for. Please just a straight answer.

    Comment by Robert S. Schuman Sr. — July 20, 2010 @ 7:38 pm

  321. Well done ad! Can’t wait for the next one.

    Comment by Steve Swisher — July 20, 2010 @ 7:54 pm

  322. I agree with post # 12 dealing with the NRA. It bothers me that Mr. Kasich does not have a good record with an organization that I am a life member of. I voted for Stickland in the last election because of his support for Second Amendment rights, but there is now way I can vote for him now with what he has done to our State. I think a lot of voters would like to see Mr. Kasich be more sensitive for individuals as myself who hold dearly to our guns and religion

    Comment by Brian Roberts — July 20, 2010 @ 8:01 pm

  323. John and Mary: I am a contributor, but don’t do Facebook and do not plan to, so cannot view your recent ad. The previous ones attacking Stickland are really bad! Let’s have some positive ones that tell what you are planning to do for the people and future of Ohio.

    Comment by Frank White — July 20, 2010 @ 8:54 pm

  324. John, i like the new ad do more of that give it back to the opponent , just keep showing your record , no trash talk just this what i can do this what i have done , defend yourself and fight fight fight for Ohio , Matthew

  325. You Did not set any thing straight yet. Strickland did not create NAFTA. We are still getting shafted from Nafta which I believe You voted for John

    Comment by John fink — July 20, 2010 @ 11:01 pm

  326. I watched the ad six times and I was not impressed. The Lehman reference is good, but the rest of the ad is an uninspiring collection of fuzzy platitudes; Governor Strickland could easily borrow the last three sentences.
Ohio didn’t lose 400,000 jobs (that’s too impersonal); 400,000 Ohioans lost their jobs. Watch your language. Keep your ads focused on people, not the state. Let’s be fair. How many lost jobs are attributed to federal fiscal and monetary policy, NAFTA, WTO, state fiscal policy, or just bad luck? Remember, it’s not the job of the state or the governor to create jobs; that’s the job of businessmen. Incidentally, how many jobs did you create? How are you going to bring lost jobs back to Ohio? I’m skeptical.
Don’t be a cry baby! They’re “tearing me down.” What did you expect? Politics is the greatest American sport. Shape up or ship out!
Lastly, you should fire the producer of your TV ads. Did he work for the lackluster McCain campaign?

    Comment by John E. Heinl — July 20, 2010 @ 11:59 pm

  327. Everyone I know feels like we’re defending
the Alamo all over again. What has happened
to this amazing country of ours??!!
We simply can’t afford to lose any more ground!!
I know public relations…. trust me,
we need to get the Country’s attention, not
just Ohioans. The entire country is so hungry
for someone to stand up, fearless, and
say, “Hey, maybe you other states, but not
us…NOT OHIO!” You’re right to not make
any apologies; the liberals need to apologise
for tearing down everything that made this
country great… the country so many people have risked their lives trying to escape to! Why? Because their countries have sunk into depression, civil wars, poverty, government dependance.., because they are run by the same politics the liberals want to adopt for MY country, MY state!!
Time for a New Slogan… “NOT OHIO!”

    Comment by Kate — July 21, 2010 @ 12:15 am

  328. John, Good ad. You need to state what your plans to help bring back jobs to Ohio, ect lower taxes. Good you have backing from “Trib” on WTAM. He is a goof, but has a powerful voice in Cleveland and surrounding areas. You need to spend more time in Northern
Ohio for name recognition. Your gun control issues need to be addressed, as our local 912 group has problems with past record. You have open invitation to speak to our group.

    Comment by Claire Howman — July 21, 2010 @ 5:39 am

  329. Firstly, it is great to see the positive changes in your website, in that now it is more user friendly and we can leave our comments. Secondly, I have been traveling this summer, and in my travels back to my other home in middle Tn.,and to Ohio to spend time with friends and family, I did my own poll of sorts. I now reside in S.W Florida, Ft. Myers/Naples area, have for about 20 years, so I included my area in my “poll”. What I found, was that at least two out of 4 people, when asked, had a NEGATIVE remark about John and his past dealing with Leahman. They felt that he supported unions, and that he had shadey biz dealings when employed with Leahman. I have been promoting John and the importance of his winning and this was the general statement made by folks in Ohio, Florida, and even Tennessee, where as you know, there are many good conservative followers who are well aware of Johns current run for Governor. I do not know what needs to be done to counter this, but, something needs to be said, and soon. It appears as though some folks in Ohio are looking at Strickland as the “less evil” one, as far as Union support would go at least, and the fact that he was or is a preacher, helps him too, evidently, folks are misled to think he(Strickland) does no “intentional wrongs” Hope this helps. I still want to come back to Ohio, to “work” with John and the team to get him elected, hope that can be worked out as well, although, I know funds are tight now, I will be optimistic. I can be very helpful with fundraising, under his employ! I also use facebook, to a minimal degree to make known to my friends the urgency to elect John. Maybe you can also start advertising a bit more with media such as Facebook, less costly than t.v ads for sure.

  330. John,
My husband is a retired law enforcement officer for the State of Ohio. I recently attended their annual conference in Independence where they agreed unananimously to support Strickland. They stated you never completed their questionnaire and have not responded to requests for info so had no other choice. You missed a great opportunity to get your name known in Northeastern Ohio and gain support from a very good organization. I support you all the way and will continue praying for you and your family. Try to get out more ads that clearly define how and what you plan to do to turn this state around and get your name known more in the Northern part of the state. I don’t like Trivisano but he does have a tremendous following and I would suggest you use any and all tools available to get your position out before the people. Keep up the good work

    Comment by Kathie Williams — July 21, 2010 @ 7:34 am

  331. John, as a small business that services the majority of people in North West Ohio for waste and recycling services I can not begin to express the concern this area has for job creation. For too long we have exceperienced 12% to 16% unemployment rates and no one has consistently come from our State goverment to tour our area. For many years residents of this area have paid in taxes more than the State returns in spending on our schools, our roads, and services to our residents. Now that our area is suffering it has become even worse through state budgetary cuts. If our State will not help us to provide the level of support that provides for education, infastructure, and services that the residents of this area need. Then we look forward to a candidate that will cut the cost of State goverment and return to this area our tax moneys that are being spent else where on things that do not benefit our local economy. For too long the rural counties of this State have been drained by the 3 C’s, we have charitably grumbled during good times, but now it is time for equitable taxation and equitable spending. It is time for the State to step down and local goverments to step up to provide for the people they serve.

  332. Stay on the offensive, not the defensive. One way to grow business in Ohio is to keep the tax burden low and offer incentives to new/growing businesses. And read these blogs. There is GREAT advice and information in them. Trample Strickland in his territory.

  334. Great Ad. Short, postive and to the point of how Ohio will create jobs. Keep the “Can Do” spirit and attitude. Ohioans NEED this type of uplifting tone and voice. Things are bad out here, we need a leader who understands and will motivate during the tough times and decisions ahead.

Keep the Positive CAN DO attitude!

Additionally, your comments regarding Southeast Ohio and us rednecks down here ensured you will not come close to getting my vote. We don’t need another Taft.

  336. The “jobs” ads coming out of Washington are stupid. This new approach is far better. Washington policies killed the jobs. So while talking about rebuilding Ohio, show that it requires standing up to the administration’s and Congress’ misguided and power-grabbing endeavors. This was Reagan’s appeal in 1980 — talking to the “Tea Party” way before its time.

  337. John,
Strickland’s ad blaming you for the Lehman actions were tiresome and obviously stretched the truth. Your ad was a very effective response, except that blaming Strickland for the loss of 400,000 jobs was stretching it .
I personally would appreciate your being more positive, with more emphasis on your qualifications & what you would do for Ohio. I believe that a large majority of us are fed up with

  342. As an Ohio teacher and past state employee, I’ve seen what Lehman Brothers and similar companies along with Wall Street have done to my retirement in STRS and PERS.

Mr. Kasich, perhaps you were only one of 700 directors nationwide, and one of two employees in the office you worked in, but you did nothing to stop what Lehman Brothers and other companies did to Ohio’s retirement programs. Let’s set the record straight. You could have quit your job and/or spoke up, but you didn’t. While you and others put money in your pockets, those of us not so “wealthy” lost our jobs and our retirements. Tell us why you didn’t try to put a stop to it? Why did you sell out our retirement programs?

And as for the 400,000 jobs…my husband works in the building trade industry. We saw this coming many years ago. This economic crisis did not happen overnight, nor did it happen in the last 18 months. This was not an “overnight” event.

If you want my vote, then tell me: About the jobs you created…where, when, how many? Also, tell me about the budgets you personally kept balanced. Tell me what exactly you plan to do for education and teachers in Ohio. Fair and equitable funding for education. And why did you stick with Lehman Brothers when you had to know what was going on? Details, please, not “sound bites.”

    Comment by Karen Gallagher — July 26, 2010 @ 8:39 am

  343. To this guy below, John Kennel….This economy was brought on by the Federal Reserve, read “End the Fed” by Ron Paul. You Dems/liberals will wake up some day and smell the toast burning, but mean while, we conservatives will try to save the day from the corruption of THIS current administration, one that does things via thug doctrine. If they don’t agree, bully them into it, that’s why so many Democratics from congress quit.

  345. I would have started out with the positive part first, which you ended with. A lot of people see the beginning of an ad then switch quickly. By addressing the Lehman Bros “issue” first, you are associating yourself with the issue – even if you are refuting the charges. Many people won’t listen to the disclaimer, just will see Kasich and hear “Lehman Bros”. Otherwise, good ad – comes across as straightforward. And avoids smearing. I am tired and turned off by the blatant smearing of some ads – they are enough to make me not vote for the candidate, regardless of which party.

Keep up the good fight. Thanks!

He voted to support the Clinton anti 2nd amendment gun laws. The jobs and economy will come back no mater who is in charge they always do, but once you loose your freedom that the 2nd amendment provides for you, you have lost the only means of defending your family and property from the elitists who would disarm America and make it ripe for take over from the criminal elements, gangs and enemies of this country my vote, reluctantly, will go to Strickland.

I would very much like to vote for a Republican this year, but you make it hard for me to vote for you. Mr. Strickland has made his pro-gun stand quite clear, while you have continually distanced yourself from Ohio’s gun owners.

Mike DeWine lost his senate seat, in part because thousands of Ohio’s gun owners couldn’t bring themselves to vote for him again. You are putting yourself in the same boat.

All I see is about how many jobs lost. Just exactly how is Kasich going to create more jobs?

I sent him one question a while back. He hasn’t replied yet. If he is this unresponsive while he is running for office, I hate to see how we will be ignored once he has power.

Also enough with the ads with mumbling people talking about how many jobs Strickland has lost (I really still do not know what some of them were saying) – Democrats will just think that it was Bush’s fault the economy is a wreck and that there has been job loss not attach it to Strickland – People want to here about a change in the way the government is currently doing business – transparent, honest, and spending less.

    Comment by Roy — July 27, 2010 @ 11:36 am

  361. Pretty good ad. It works for me. However, I think a lot of people out there appreciate a more touchy, feely approach. Something that shows a little of your upbringing in a small town, followed by some shots of you in Congress (maybe posing with the balanced budget that you helped create), a quick shot working in the “private sector” (wouldn’t necessarily mention Lehman Brothers by name). Follow those shots up with a shot of you playing with your kids or holding hands with your wife , and you’re the next Governor! This kind of ad may sound a little cheesy, but it may help win over the multitudes of voters that do not take the time to actually learn facts about the candidates, those that just seem to vote for the ad that makes them feel good.

    Comment by Robert Galloway — July 27, 2010 @ 11:43 am

  362. I like the ad but also want more specifics on how John will change things in Ohio. And get the current ad off – the one with the people talking about lost jobs and will they be next. Having managed a call center for many years, my first comment was that you will lose your job soon if you don’t answer that ringing phone. The ad is one ot the worst I have ever seen. Jobs are important but there has to be a better way to present the issue and use some of the time for other issues.

    Comment by Dan Carty — July 27, 2010 @ 12:11 pm

  364. Good. Will you please speak out on behalf of our crippled Ohio heroes who served & are serving overseas in Iraq & Afghanistan?
They’re denied natalizumab (aka Tysabri) for spinal cord injuries even though US based Ohio military personnel get it for other indications. Is that fair?
If Ohioans in combat get a 1959 drug called methylprednisolone for their crippling injuries and no one will speak up for their freedom to elect to enter a clinical trial of newer drugs for spinal cord injury, who will you speak up for?
In view of the American Disability Act which states that disabled should enjoy the same freedoms & privileges of the abled, why should Ohioans serving in the US military & in combat OVERSEAS & crippled be DENIED natalizumab for their crippling injuries, but Ohioan military personnel here in Ohio get it?
Natalizumab is in clinical trials here in US & Europe to see if patients walk & have better bladder function…but it’s denied to our Ohio heroes fighting for our freedoms OVERSEAS. And you’re ok with this?
Natalizumab (aka Tysabri) made in USA, but DoD is supporting a FRENCH drug called riluzole in FDA clinical trials for spinal cord injury & all we get is silence from Ohio Republicans?
At least some Democrats spoke up for a prominent lawyer dying of cancer, Frederick Baron, to get natalizumab years ago.
Who will you speak up for?
    Still waiting for your answer.
If you can’t speak up for those USA jobs in North Carolina, should Ohioans believe you’ll speak up for theirs? Or do you prefer the French to have theirs?
I’m a lifelong registered Republican but suspicious of political candidates that won’t stand up for all jobs in the USA.

  367. 1. As with most of the Kasich/Taylor ads the production itself is weak: John is dressed informally and moves his head excessively.
    2. The brief discussion of Lehman Bros is defensive in nature–a mistake.
    3. Jobs are important but no mention is made of the underlying causes–government spending and over-regulation. Further, the direct mention of Strickland makes it seem like an attack ad–but a weak one.
    4. A brief ad should discuss one issue, not attempt to cram several into thirty seconds.

The strongest issue among independents today is government over-spending. I suggest this should be the basis for every ad, if no more than mentioning it on the way to a discussion of jobs.

If the Lehman Bros attack by the Dems must be countered it should be done in a separate presentation, preferably in a positive manner that gives John’s history with the company and–among other things–mentions the Obama administration’s decision to let Lehman go down the tubes while they selectively saved Bear-Stearns and AIG.

  368. I do not like the tone of the ad. It is a reaction and plays into you opponent’s hand. Please, start telling Ohioans what you are going to do and stop telling us what the current govenor isn’t doing. We know that. You are talking to adults. This ad sounds as if it were written by feuding, seventh grade boys. Listen to your heart, John. You know what to say. Possibly you should run the next ad past your Bible study group. Politics is ugly. Step out of the mud. We are hungry for a man of dignity and honor. Say what you mean and MEAN what you say. When your message is upbeat and positive, I will send you a check. It won’t be big, so don’t get excited. Good luck. Ohioans need you. Our country needs you. Cut taxes and stop, stop spending the peoples’ money. You know how. Just tell us how you are going to do it. I’m with you. P.S. please not: I did not use the name Strickland once. You might try that approach.

  369. As a small retailer, we are bring pummeled by the downturn in the economy especially in southwest Ohio. The penalities charged by the state if you can’t pay your taxes are staggering. It would seem that not only is Strickland driving the business out of state, it would seem that he’s not going to be happy until he’s driven out even more. If a regular business charged the exhorbitant fees/taxes the State of Ohio charges, we’d be thrown in Jail.

If we can bail out the big companies and banks, here’s hoping you can get some of the interest/deliquent fees waived so the small business might survive.

I’m working service professional father with a working professional wife; two kids in college, and not a minority. We dont make 120k (before taxes) For almost two years, I’ve taken days without pay, a 401k that my company no longer pays into and healthcare that is $350 a month just to have. By God, public service can do the same!

We’re productive but its time to STOP public double dipping! Thanks for the work but stay retired so the young work force will stay HERE.

Its time to tell the EPA to get lost, we all want the clean enviroment but not to the 1492 era!! Lets use export tax on electricity leaving the state. Add on the to nuke plants. Make it easy.

Its time to look at the ‘sweatheart’ contracts the state doles out at low (sometimes that low bid is rejected for anothers…wink wink) bid then the state gets pounded for cost overruns or additonal fees. Just look at the City of Columbus with their bridge……..

Dont worry about the working man look, we need a damn professional with guts and direction. Suit and tie are great starters then rippin off the coat and roll up the sleeves.

ITS time for TED to get the hell out of the way.
I’ll let you use that one.

  376. Suggestion for the ad:
Good ad except for the disruptive musical background. It is just too loud. I suspect that a 65-year old would have a problem untangling your message from the music; but a 25-year old might not (unless he is simultaneously listening to his own music on his IPod). Even if you intend to put the listener on edge with the annoying choices of notes and distracting volume, certainly you don’t want that effect to block out your final message.
    Recommendations:
    a. Cut the background music in half after the first 5 seconds, then cut in half again once you start talking about what you are going to do.
    b. The cost of this fix should be borne by whoever first advised these choices of music and volume level.

Suggestion for your campaign position on “Ending the Influence of Special Interests”:
I endorse Don Danford’s ideas on “Congressional Reform act of 2010”. (response #62 on your ad blog’s string of responses). But this is a state election; why worry about the federal term limits?

The reason is that the absence of term limits at the federal level permits the more senior federal legislators to unfairly pull money away from the other states. For an example, look at the state which shares our southeastern border. So no matter how well our governor does his job, the share of Ohio spending (that depends on the good graces of the federal government) can be choked off by some other state’s very senior congressman. So it is the governor’s business.
    Recommendations:
    a. Once you are governor, initiate an amendment to render our governor’s term limits “pure” like 8 other states already have: i.e., two terms is the limit, no matter what. Make it known during the campaign that you are pledging to do this in order to make our Ohio system as strong as you can make it, even though Ohio is already better than 14 other states which have no term limits at all.
    b. Explore the feasibility that you could persuade certain other gubernatorial candidates, especially a few of those seeking election in the 14 states which now have no term limits, to take the same action once they are elected.
    c. Once you are governor, explore the feasibility of using the National Governors Association as a vehicle for supporting a US constitutional amendment on congressional term limits. With over 2/3 of the states now using “pure” or “impure” two term limits for their governors, there might be strong support for making term limits at the federal level a priority of the NGA.

  380. John,
This ad doesn’t do you justice as a man of principle and moral character, which are the deep core values that will give you the direction in your decision making. You have a deep, abiding faith, and a love and respect for the average family that is trying to make ends meet in these trying times. You should be connecting with people that can appreciate this refreshing addition to the polluted political arena.

Perhaps you should focus on your plans for ‘fixing’ Ohio, in a relaxed, confident manner peppered with dialogue that let’s the citizens get to know the real you. Tell us that you fear for small businesses, the average family, education, etc. which motivated you to run and take us in a new direction. Tell us that you are sick and tired of politics-as-usual, and want to spend your time as our governor really being there for us…..give examples. In other words, capitalize on your personality and demeanor as an honest, caring man, while impacting on the problems and how you plan to fix them.

  384. I have read all of comments about the ad and I hope John takes heed of the advice they contain. Some very good points were made. Strickland has two things going for him–portraying John as a “fat cat” and his endorsement by the NRA that shocked me. John, talk about you as a person and bring some Ronald Reagan into the mix. You need to make yourself personable. Strickland did a good job of this in his ads during his first election. Tells us about YOU and want YOU will do for Ohio. Be positive and tell the gun owners you do not support gun control and believe in the 2nd Amendment.

HOW did you balance a budget, WHAT taxes did you cut…WHAT did you do to create jobs???? And what will you DO, specifically, for Ohio? Just a few quick concrete ideas and statements, again and again, is more effective than these vague “I want to bring jobs back to Ohio” kind of statements. Every politician says that.

  386. The Ad would be more effective if John would just briefly mentioned one specific way in which he would bring jobs back to Ohio.

  387. This ad is an excellent beginning. Now I’d like to see specific ideas about HOW we get the jobs back and correct school funding problems. Each issue should be the topic of a separate ad building up to the election. I’m working for you and Mary in Mansfield.

  388. John, you use the words truth in your ad. Please tell us why we should take this seriously after the glaring lie in your new book dealing with faith, or do you not feel it is necessary for a man of faith to be truthful but rather to tell people what he thinks they want to hear? Your answer would be appreciated.

  389. John,
I cannot endorse you for Senator untill you are for the NRA, and the Second Admendment. The Constitution of the United States is important to me, and many others. Endorse the Second Admendment and I will endorse you!

  390. Just don’t run a smear campaign and you’ll be a breath of fresh air.

  391. Dear Mr. Kasich:
I truly hope you can help us all. Strictland is business as usual. We need an honest person in office to straighten out the corruption that is chocking Ohio.
    1. Oil/gas well drilling without any real emergency preparedness and cities stripped of control by Columbus legislators. Oil leaks (Gates Mills, North Royalton) and gas explosions (Bainbridge) … does Strictland care? NO! Do you? We’ve joined as volunteers of NEOGAP.
    2. The legal system in Ohio is corrupt. Pete’s laid off over 8 years, lost his unemployment benefits due to a noncompete agreement that an employer chose to interfere with. ODJFS stripped Pete of his benefits and even the Ohio courts sided unjustly with ODJFS. Corruption! Not for the people!
    3. Pete’s attorneys failed to file required documents, one fled to the Virgin Islands and the other continues to practice law as a paralegal despite an Ohio Supreme Court ruling that he could NOT! CBA and others sided with the attorney and her paralegal despite a chase manager in Cincinatti indicating this is not the first time these two failed to file. Corruption!
    4. Ohio law says we must carry proof of insurance. Pete was knocked down by a snow plow and the driver had no proof of insurance. Sherrod Brown forwarded our complaint to Strictland …. no reply!!! Corruption!
    5. Our property tax has gone up despite property values plummeting in North Royalton … no effective adjustment from Russo who is also under investigation for corruption!
No wonder this state is sinking into a cesspool.
Its a simple matter of economics and common sense and logic. The citizens if they have money will buy goods and the economy will improve. If money is hijacked by corrupt politicians citizens will become poor and will not be able to spend money to buy goods and the economy will deteriorate. Greed by the rich = a poor Ohio. Try and get tax money out of someone with empty pockets. Try and get blood out of a turnip. Try and make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
Our Ohio leaders can’t be that dumb … or are they?
Hope we can talk … we may not make the next property tax payment …
    Sincerely,
    Peter and Irene

  392. I haven’t been impressed with any of the Kasich adds so far. I know that the unions and taxes were the true cause of lost jobs in Ohio and the Nation.
What I want to hear is a candidate that believes all america isn’t out to kill their neighbors with their guns, so the weapons should be taken away. Especially with a government such as we have now that is working to bankrupt our country and take it over with power hungry, idealistic ideas. And I also want to hear that our next governor and US Congressmen and Senators will back the current immigration laws and get off this kick of giving all our resources we hard working american have worked and paid for to those unwilling to follow the guidelines our ancestors and true, honest immigrants followed for the right to live here as citizens. Amnesty citizenship be damned!!!!!
You don’t seem to be interested in these areas, and they definately are more important to most of us than the fact you were willing to gain bountiful employment after your last political career. I liked you then, so show me the old J.O. and what you can and will do for what is really important. Anyone with a little education knows that the taxes our industry and small business has to pay is what kills us in Ohio, and if that isn’t enough, it’s the unions closing down our manufacturing. If the government is going to do anything for it’s constituants that is positive in the job market by regulation, then let it address these serious issues.

  393. We are all tired of political rhetoric and negative adds. Stay positive and stick to the facts/solutions on how you will accomplish your political promises. Who doesn’t want to hear their taxes will be lowered? We need jobs and a solution to our school funding problem. The endless property tax levies are wearing on us all.

    Comment by Larry — August 5, 2010 @ 3:00 pm

  394. People are looking for solutions. I like the direct response to Lehman Brothers but the remainder of the ad sounds like traditional “I will work to….” The people are looking for your answers to Ohio’s problems. If that is political suicide at the very least be specific about how you solved tough problems when you previously held office. People want this: What was the problem – how did you solve it?
If you were applying for a CEO position in any major company would you interview sound like that ad?
Sell Ohioians on what you bring to the table, how your past experience brings value to the problems this state faces, and sell us with tangible talk about your leadership solutions.
People are tired of government being run like a club. Bring a professional business approach to the table that we can respect and invest in.

  395. Mr. John Kasich,
I cannot endorse you for Senator until you are for the NRA, and the Second Amendment. And the Bill of Rights The Constitution of the United States is important to me, and many others. Endorse the Second Amendment and I will endorse you! You have to state your love for our God and Country. Our Military Men and Women are counting on you to follow a true Conservative route. Remember that Ohio speaks English and that is the only langrage we want to see on our signs and Lumber yards. We want you to close our Ohio boarders to ALL Illegal’s. And put God back in school and on all of our Federal buildings. Until I hear from what you believe in I will have to vote with the guy for the Constitution and the Second Amendment. And remember we in Ohio want Term Limits we don’t want you as a Career Government Employee. We want you to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on principles of free enterprise., limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values and a strong national defense.
